Only commercial vas tapes (movies) show up on my screen. Home movies that I want to record are playing in the vcr but not showing up in the vidbox screen to record
I made sure there was content on the home vas tape I want to record onto my mac and while the mechanism instructions like play, ff, eject show up the screen remains blue. When I put in a vas movie (commercial made) it shows up fine

I assume you are trying to record from a VCR tape to a dvd? It could be the copyright protection causing this issue. A little more information would be a great help. What are you trying to record? VCR Tapes. Are these home movies or are they retail movies. Macrovision prevents recording. If you are trying to record a television show, it could be the digital rights protection. do you have it connected to satellite or cable.
You can try cleaning the video heads and tape path within the VCR deck. If this doesn't fix it, then the heads are worn, or there is a fault with the head amplifier (this is part of the motherboard and nearly all surface-mounted components).
I would go with the simplest option first: check the condition of the heads, if dirty, clean them with commercially available head cleaning products such as isopropyl alcohol (IPA) head cleaning solution.
lets say you are hooked up correctly (cable to VCR in (from cable/sat box) & cable to TV from VCR out) and the VCR is set to Ch 3,, (PLEASE NOTE THE TV MUST BE ON CH 3)
program a recording the VCR clock / date must be set and not flashing 12:00 then you go to menu, program a recording by imputing the start time / end time of the show and the date it will be recorded and Ch 3...(you might have to set your cable box for the same date/time as the VCR or manually turn to that ch you wish to record that morning or before you go to bed) put a new tape in the machine....
manual recording a show, game or special comes on and you sitting and want to watch and record and even edit (no commercials) put tape in... press record button get the remote so you can pause (on commercials) and press pause again to resume recording
well if the vcr is hooked up and you can watch a show on it put in a tape that has a movie on it then press play if you can see the show take out that tape put in your blank tape find the show on your tv u wish to record press record try this before the show comes on record a little bit of a show like 30 sec or so then rewind and play back to see if it did record if it did just repete this when the show that you want to record comes on hope this is helpfull....
Check the tape, by opening the cover, to see if the tape is damaged. Look for signs of crinkling at the edges. This is often caused by the roller being worn on one of the VCR.
If it's damaged there's not a lot you can do.
If there's no damage try taking it out of the cassette box and fitting it in a new 'good make' blank tape tape box, discard the new tape in it. Still no good?
Next step, is the tape a movie/tv made by a commercial company. Or a recording on a blank tape?
Did it ever play? (if a movie) if not suspect a pirate tape report seller to FACT.
If a blank tape, try recording on a blank section. If that doesn't work and your video will record on other blank tapes. The tape has something wrong with it.
Some video recorders will play tapes with bad problems IE bad tracking, that others refuse to play, but you will either have to find one owned by a friend or buy one with that claim.
If you try and record a video with copygaurd it will only record a tiny section. If you press stop or return for 3 seconds you will cancel the recording, try pressing the pause button you edit out adverts, i have not tried this yet but it might work.
