Before you think about recalibration or any electrical adjustments . lets review one is the whole picture over scanning the screen did you switch it into a different format like wide screen check that you may want to get the owners Manuel out for the help there. option two . you cleaned the optics now the picture is to wide ? did you loosen the lenses on top of the tubes ? there are wing nuts that set the static focus on the three picture tubes did you move them or loosen the look at which color is over scanning if its all of them then id suspect a format change using the factory remote its simple to switch it back the mouse pad on the remote is the 4 arrows with the center push button by left or right it will walk through those modes . let me know how that works out please .

Sounds like your convergence chip has gone bad. Usually costs about $300-$400 to fix. I would call a local TV repair shop and let them give you a free estimate.

Sounds like a convergence problem. I can tell you that the site that Jean posted will not fix this problem and could even make things worse. That site pertains to a specific problem that is common in some Sony sets and should not be used to try to fix any other issue.

Please keep in mind many things can go wrong with TV sets and you should really do a lot of research before attempting any adjustment and or repair. There are high voltages present and they can reside even when the set is unplugged.

How to Troubleshoot Vertical Lines on an LCD TV Screen

<p>There are two prevalent formats for video programming: full screen and wide screen. LCD TVs are designed to show a wide screen picture to go with high-definition (HD) programming. When standard-definition (SD) programming is watched on an LCD HDTV in its default settings mode, there will be two vertical lines on the right and left sides of the picture. You need to go into your TV settings menu to troubleshoot this issue.<br /> jQuery('.intro .thumbnail').each(function(i,e){ jQuery(e).find('img').one('error',function(){ jQuery(e).remove(); }); }); <span><br /></span> <span>Instructions</span> <ol> <li> 1 Press the "Menu" button on your remote control and open the "Picture Settings" sub-menu.<br /> </li> <li> 2 Select "View" from the list of options.<br /> </li> <li> 3 Choose a viewing mode that will eliminate the vertical lines. Select "Zoom" to crop the on-screen image to fit the screen. Select "Wide/Widescreen" to stretch the on-screen image to fit the screen, or select "Panoramic/Panorama" to stretch the sides of the onscreen image to fit the screen (recommended).<br /> </li></ol>

CHANGING THE SCREEN ASPECT RATIO: ( From Manual )
The TV can display images in four different modes: Wide, Zoom, Panoramic, and Normal. Each mode displays the picture differently. To change the screen aspect ratio:
1. Press the MENU button on the remote.
2. Use the Arrow buttons to highlight the Wide icon. Press OK.
3. Use the Arrow buttons to highlight your desired screen mode and press OK:
• Normal preserves the content's original aspect ratio. Since the 4:3 aspect ratio is not large enough to fill the TV's screen, black bars are added to the left and right of the display image.
• Wide stretches a 4:3 aspect ratio picture to the edges of the screen. Since the picture is being stretched, the display image may appear distorted. If the program is already formatted for widescreen viewing (1.85:1 or 2.35:1), then black bars will appear on the top and bottom of the display image.
• Zoom expands images with black bars to fit the screen.
• Panoramic expands the display image to fill the screen.
images may appear wider than intended.
If you are watching widescreen (1.85:1 or 2.35:1) content, black bars will still appear on the top and bottom of the display image. This option is only available when the TV is displaying a 480i/480p source.

The screen on my tv has two slightly discoloured vertical bars

Sounds like image retention. Is it an older Plasma TV?
Image retention is when an image left is left on for a while actually "burns" into the image. It would be especially noticeable in BluRay because it is a bright image. The burn in was probably cause by watching Cable in 4:3. Try to find a static white image to display over night that should remove the burn in.

CHECK IT IN THE DIFFERENT ASPECT MODES. IF THE IMAGE STAYS IN THE SAME PLACE REGARDLESS OF ASPECT. THEN YOU HAVE A LCD PANEL PROBLEM. PANEL WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

Vizio VX32L image distorts on edges like looking in a metal bowl.

I had a similar issue. Realized that the TV's "WIDE" setting was changed from "Wide" to "Panaramic". It was this panaramic setting that was causing the distortion on both sides of the screen. I had to switch it back to "Wide" using the "Wide" button on the remote to toggle back to "Wide" setting. Once I put it back to "Wide", problem went away. Hope this helps.

Image too big for screen

I have the same tv.
On your remote push menu, then go to settings, and then screen. Put the auto wide to on. And keep the picture mode on normal, not the zoom or wide zoom. If its in HD it will fit the screen. If its not in HD it will crop the sides. This worked for me, hope it works out.

Scanned image on left is cropped by a good quarter of an inch.

To get the image on the right side, Select 11" wide and the length you want. Keep the paper guides at the far ends. Insert the paper at the extreme right side and the image will appear on the right side. The left side would appear dark and You may need software to clean. If you dont have Raster Editing software, best way is to stick your image onto a white paper and scan the whole paper. Ensure that the ends are trim. ( I am assuming it is faceup scanning)
