Question about Whirlpool Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

Can I replace the plug *only* on a Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 range with a 3-prong plug?

I believe I need a copper strap to ground from the neutral wire on the back of the range to the frame, but I want to know if it's OK to just do that and leave the green ground wire connected to nothing on both ends. And then, can I just buy a copper grounding strap at Lowe's and attach it to the neutral wire and frame anywhere?

There should be a short metal strap or the center lug itself connected to the body of the range from factory you only need a four wire cord if you are in a modular or mobile home then connect green wire to any screw on range body itself such as at large wire clamp where cord enters body of appliance

Can I replace the plug *only* on this range with a 3-prong plug? I believe I need a copper strap to ground from the neutral wire on the back of the range to the frame, but I want to know if it's OK to

When you buy a new appliance that needs a cord, usually the screw that connects the neutral (white wire) is bridge with the cabinet or ground, with a piece of copper, that should be removed when you are going to install a 4 prong cord and the green from the cord goes to ground or chassis.
Neutral and ground have the same potential in normal condition.
Since 4 prong is safer than 3 prong, and is required to meet code,
I suggest replacing the female plug for a 4 prong instead.

You should buy an actual range cord for about $15 because if it doesn't meet code and something happens it will void your warranty or worse your homeowners may not cover any fire damage. Good Luck.

4-prong to 3-prong Power Cord Conversion.

On a 4-prong power cord you have 2 hot wires, one neutral wire, and one ground wire. On a three prong cord, you have 2 hot wires and one neutral/ground wire. The difference is the on four prong the neutral wire goes to electrical neutral bus in the breaker panel and the ground wire goes to the ground bus in the breaker panel. Since the neutral and ground buses, although separate, both go to physical ground, on a three-wire setup, you are just putting the neutral and ground wire together, Most dryers actually have a place at the pigtail connection to do just that.

Changing from a 3 prong to a 4 prong power cord and not sure where to connect the green ground wire. it has red, white and black so those were easy, it is a whirlpool super capacity 465 range

green wire is ground, so there is a spot by where the wires go into the range, with a screw on it that may be green, and the green wire attaches to that. it may say earth by it as well and have a symbol that looks like a 3 lined arrow pointing down.

I have a Heavy Duty Super capacity 5 cycle dryer 3 temp range. Dryer came with 4 prongs and my recepticle only has three. Can I replace three prong cord with a three prong cord and how do I do that?

Yes you can. The 4th prong is ground. Just make sure you have the device grounded in some way. So you have 2 hots...a neutral and a ground.

I have a new 4 prong plug to replace a old 3 prong on dryer

On a three wire configuration, the ground and the negative are tied together at the center position, using the dryer ground strap. Following is a description of the difference between three and four wire. Hope it helps you.
These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one on top/left is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown on the bottom/right.
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

You'll need to get a new 4 prong cable. Connect wires as color coded now and connect the green to the frame.
