Try these suggestions
1. Change the needle--use a needle that's for the fabric being sewed
2. Rethread the machine--top --make sure to use every thread guide
3. try a different bobbin--make sure bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case, & make sure the bobbin is turned the correct way in the bobbin case
4. make sure the thread has not come off the thread take up lever
5. Clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or threads

Top thread is bunching underneath

bunching underneath is an indication that the top tension is incorrect
switching projects and materials also that attention has to be given to tension adjustment both bottom and top
the catching sometimes indicates that a tension is too tight and is pulling the needle out of line

Janome excel 23x sewing machine. How can i get the needle needle up and downto engage, It stopped working in the middle of a project. How do I get it to engage?

IF IT STOPPED WORKING AS IN WOULDN'T GO UP OR DOWN WHILE SEWING THIS IS WHAT I THINK. TURN YOUR HAND WHEEL TOWARDS YOU, FORCEFULLY IF NECESSARY. ONCE THE NEEDLE IS ALL THE WAY UP TAKE YOUR BOBBIN AND CARRIER OUT AND CLEAN THIS AREA AND BLOW IT OUT. PUT A DROP OF SEWING MACHINE OIL ON THE RACE WHERE THE CARRIER SITS. FIRST, CHECK THE TENSION BY HANGING THE BOBBIN AND ADJUST THE THREAD UNTIL IT WILL EXTEND A LITTLE WHEN YOU BOUNCE THE BOBBIN THREAD SOFTLY. AFTER YOU HAVE REPLACED THE CARRIER GO AHEAD AND PLACE THE PLATE ON. NOW, RETURN THE BOBBIN AND BE SURE THAT YOU REPLACE IT WITH THE THREAD GOING AWAY FROM THE BOBBIN CUT. NOW, LOAD YOUR TOP THREAD AND SET THE TENSION AT 3. TEST THIS AND ADJUST THE TOP TENSION AS YOU NEED TO. AFTER YOU ARE HAPPY THEN SEW. GOOD RULE...REPLACE YOUR NEEDLE OFTEN. CLEAN YOUR BOBBIN AREA OFTEN.

Bottom thread bunches

try changing the needle
rethread the machine top & bobbin
clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or thread
make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case
if none of these suggestions help then it's possible that the machine is out of time & needs to be serviced

The bottom thread will bunch up occasionally, and stop the machine with thread hooked somewhere--probably around the bobbin.

Hmmm, does the thread bunch up under the fabric or in the bobbin?
Check both your tensions and if that doesn't work it could be that your machine is slightly off time and needs to be adjusted.

I have a Singer Sewing Machine 5817C, the thread bunches under the fabric while sewing. I have tried adjusting all the switches so that I just get a standard straight stitch, but it bunches up on the...

Make sure that there is tension on the thread when you have passed it through the tension unit, by making sure the presser foot is down, and then gently pulling the thread to feel tension. If there is no tension, as seems to be the case, check the tension discs inside the unit to make sure that there is no debris stopping them from closing.

Problem sitching

I had this problem when I mixed my singer bobbins with my Janome bobbins. Are you using flat bobbins or rounded ones? If they are rounded, they are your problem. Only flat bobbins work in Janome machines.
