That is a good question however More information would help us such as model. Normally the bios is in flash memory, no user data is stored there. There is a process called reflashing that you can go through but you will have to read the manual to find out how. If it boots and operates properly the BIOS is ok.

Windows 7, i5intel, 64bit Desktop. Most information I have gleaned so far is that my CMOS battery is probably, causing many websites that I try to access, to be blocked. I need to know how to retrieve my files from an old hard drive on a new laptop or desktop, how & where do i install it, the prongs don't seem to match.

You will need a few items to get data off of your old Hard-Drive.
If you have already removed the old hard-drive you'll need something like this:

to attach to another machine to extract the data.

Your old HDD will act like a external hard-drive and you can retrieve your data that way.

Hope that helps

How can recovery Hp bios when it has crashed

This could be a memory probably but very unlikely depending on the timing of your restart. If you restarted in the middle of running the BIOS update then the problem is very likely that you have the BIOS in a non-recoverable state. There are lots of warnings that say don't restart the computer and unlike 99.9% of software, this one can break your hardware. Your BIOS the part of your motherboard that sees all of the connected hardware and if it isn't working then nothing is going to work ever. The good thing is that motherboards aren't that expensive for desktops. Also your HD is still readable so you will be able to get your data off it if you need to.
If you didn't restart early and did it when the installer said it was OK to then it could actually be an issue with RAM. Bad memory can/will cause your computer to not POST which is that screen you first get when powering up your computer, behind the HP splash screen. A quick easy way to test if you have bad RAM is to swap it out. Unplug your computer and open it up. Hopefully on the motherboard you will see multiple sticks of RAM. You can google search SD or DDR RAM to get an idea of what you are looking for. Next take one of the sticks out then plug the computer back in and power it up. See if it works and if it doesn't do the same thing with the other stick. If you only have 1 stick then you can't test this because you need at least one plugged in for your computer to work.
If that doesn't work then you might have a dead motherboard from a bad BIOS update. Running BIOS updates always make me nervous because if anything goes wrong your motherboard is dead in the water.
You can bring it to a computer repair shop to see if they can get it working again. Like the issue with the RAM there are other pieces of hardware that could be bad but people don't normally have the hardware laying around to swap out. Also they can take your hard drive out to backup the files needed if you do have a bad motherboard.

How do i locate the hp probook 4520s BIOS password jumper on the motherboard

The 6930p uses the HP Sparekey method of password recovery. The owner sets a password and then completes hints to retrieve it in case it is lost.

They can also register the password with HP and upon providing proper proof of ownership, HP will provide the password the owner registered with HP.

So, if a person can't remember the password or the password hints, they can get it from HP.

If the password wasn't registered, or you are not the original owner, there is nothing you can do to retrieve the password, or clear it.

You will need a new motherboard, or you can strip the notebook for parts (except for the motherboard, which is useless as it is).

Last but not least you can install the Operating System again and this will by pass the Windows password. That would be my option instead of using the computer for a door jam or throwing it out. Just get a System restore disk or another Operating System disk upgrade to Win 7 good software for a laptop.

I have an HP media center m260n and it is stuck on blue hp logo screen. we've unplugged everything (except monitor and wired keyboard) and continually pushed the F1 (set up) key and still nothing. any...

Well, you had the exact right idea, it's just that you was pushing the wrong button is all.
Make sure the power cord and ethernet cable if your computer needs one, and then press and hold the power button for a minimum of 45 seconds, and then release the button.

This allows for the capacitors on the motherboard to discharge their static charge, and return the motherboard to a ready state.

This isn't just a "shadetree machanic" type of fix, it is also the official HP procedure for a hard system reset.

Hp says that in some cases, this might also reset the bios password to blank, so if you have a password on your bios, you might need to redo it afterwards.

HP said that it is a motherboard problem, but I have worked on several HP computers, and it's NOT the motherboard that goes wrong, it's a glitch in the bios program.
Unfortunately, HP uses their own bios, so you can't just load any bios that you want into it.
Too bad, though, because some bios programs have extra features built in to them, allowing extra functions like overclocking the processor, turning on multi-core support, and being able to add more memory than HP bios will allow.

I hope this helps you to know what is going on.

Good luck to you, and have a good day.

My hard drive is suddenly undetectable by mac. when i plugged it in windows, it said "the drive is not formatted" how do i retrieve my files?

The Mac and the windows file system are different. So if you will connect a Mac file system formatted hard drive to a windows system then it may occur. To retrieve your data from your MAC hard drive you have to connect the drive to a Mac system.

Check the cables of the hard drive or replace them. You can try to connect with another port of the mother board. If the Bios don't detect your hard drive then check the bios settings. If the bios detects your hard drive but you can't access it then try to repair the OS to retrieve your data.

Compaq will not boot

Sounds like your hard drive has begun to fail or has failed. Enter into your BIOS again and find the menu choice that lets you reset everything back to the defaults.

If you have the recovery CD that came with your Compaq you can try running that to see if it will mark the bad spots on the drive and allow you to continue using it.

I would recommend that you resign yourself to the fact that you will have to replace the drive soon. If there is valuable data on the drive, buy a new hard drive, install it and run the recovery CD on it. When you are able to boot up to Windows successfully, shut it down, unplug power and add the old drive as a slave to see if you can retrieve data from it.

If that does not work and the data is worth paying some serious money to retrieve, there are places that are able to retreive data even if the drive will not even spin. They are expensive!
