Defroster not working

Hello Kim Wiederman,

Without your Make/Model ... (would be wonderful)
I can only wax on in vague generalities... but
I love refrigerators... and I reasonably good
with my vagueness... & generalities.

Meh... 95% (gross generality) of all refrigerator
have three (3) basic elements that comprise
the DEFROST Circuit

1. Defrost TIMER (or control board (PCB)).
2. Defrost thermostat (keeps HEATER @ room temp (opens)).
3. HEATER Element (Usu: at bottom of EVAPORATOR)

Defrost timers... easy to detect issues: Generally WHITE
in color... Lend themselves EASILY to the mark of a
SHARPIE (fine point permanent marker).
Put a DOT on the center (armature) and one
IMMEDIATELY next to it on the body of the timer...
As motion is detected by those DOTs moving apart
you can move on to the Defrost Thermostat.
Modern units have PCB power CONTROL board
that FAIL as good as MECHANICAL TIMERS...
trouble is... pack replacement is the ONLY real test
(and they are expensive).

Defrost Thermostat...
Situated at the TOP of the EVAPORATOR it is designed to OPEN the HEATER circuit when the defrosting unit reaches room temperature (conducts at freezing , opens near room temp)...

Protects soft (impressionable) plastics.

HEATER Element.
Runs from line voltage... easy to test continuity
(works or not).

Be careful... TAKE LOTS of useable pictures
BEFORE disconnecting anything/everything...

If you pull all the wires off and have no idea how to put them back... you will be at the TOTAL MERCY of the SEARS
repair clowns (aka Samsonite Gorillas) ...

((sorry real Gorillas))

Freezer fan keeps running & I have frost buildup

Hello Jerry. Your SXS refrigerator has one of 3 possible problems. 1-the defrost timer is bad. 2-the defrost terminator is bad 3-the defrost heater is bad.

Out of the 3, the most probable is the defrost Terminator, p/n 297216600, $12.00 If this goes bad, and many do, then the refrigerator will not be able to initiate a defrost cycle.
The next likely is the Defrost Timer, p/n 215846602, $ 16.00

To test, using a flat blade screwdriver, located the defrost timer, down on the bottom left side of the refrigerator, and turn the timer until a click is heard. stop turning and check for 120vac on the defrost line at the evaporator. it is either a brown or a pink wire. If you have a non-contact voltage detector, just probe around for voltage. If you have voltage, then you need to replace the defrost terminator. if you have no voltage, replace the defrost timer.

The last possible is the defrost heater. this should ohm out at or around 15k ohms. But in reality, anything other than an open circuit is ok.

Timer, terminator first !

Amana refrigerator bottom freeze is not cooling; about 8 years old; the cooling switch was replaced and still does not cool

Kim pull refrigerator away from wall and unplug power. Remove lower panel that cover compressor and condenser fan and condenser coils. Don't wait too long but feel the top of compressor and tell me if cool, warm or too hot to hold had there. Let me know those results as I gather up the possible problems that could be related. Did you by chance check the defrost timer by turning timer through opening below and behind the Control panel=> ARB2217CSR Control Panel Did you say you changed a switch or thermostat here? See the defrost timer in photo at location 12? Try turning clockwise slowly until compressor starts or stops what ever may be happening. If stuck in defrost the timer part number=> 67001036 Defrost Timer It is possible that is the only problem but I will wait until I hear from you on turning the defrost Timer and feeling the top of compressor. If this post is helpful please rate, Thank You, John Tripp/AKA Sea Breeze

Fridge and freezer do not seem to be cooling but light still comes on when door is opened

your defrost timer is stuck it is in the back of the fridge at the bottom take the cover off & to the left hand side there is a plastic timer. the coloured bit in the middle of the timer needs to be twisted clockwise with a screw driver or pair of scissors.this is manually putting it in & out of a defrost.this is a quick fix the defrost timer will get stuck again so it will need to be replaced.

The fridge is freezing all food contents even when on factory setting 6. How do I resolve this?

It's common problem. You have to check Defrost timer, thermostat and defrost heater. Any one malfunction, you will get over frosting. How to check?
First, locate the defrost timer which may hidden behindcorners of the fridge at the back bottom, in some models located in the ceilingof the fresh food section or behind the cold control cover. Once you locate thedefrost timer, slowly turn the screw in the middle of the defrost timer withstraight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. Now it's in defrost. If thedefrost heater(s) starts, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. Ifthe heater(s) does not start, unplug wire cord to check ohm test for continuityof heater. If continuity is there, plug cord wire which gives power 120volts(check specification) to heater. If heater no starts, bypass defrost thermostatby join the 2 wires in the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on,replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, replace it. Thanks and hope helpful.

I don't have an owners manual and want to know where I should set the freezer to avoid unnecessary ice build-up. Also is there a setting for defrost?

Click Here for your user manual=> MQU1556AEW.pdf The settings for defrost should come automatically every 12 hours. You may test the defrost timer that appears to be behind the kick plate at base and front bottom of refrigerator by removing the kick plate first and using a flathead screwdriver turn slowly clockwise until compressor stops. After a few minutes you should be able to hear a crackling noise or sizzle by opening the door and listening. Leave the timer like that for up to 35 minutes and if the freezer does not start on its own the the timer is not working properly and will need replaced. Click Here=> MQU1556AEW Unit parts number 15 in photo is defrost timer. The defrost timer is part number=> 4357124 Defrost Timer Check for air leaks around door seal as this will cause the same symptoms. If by chance the defrost timer works and the defrost does not then let me know here or here=> Appliance 911 The only other parts are the defrost heater number 16 in photo MQU1556AEW Unit Parts and part number for defrost heater is Click Here=> 8201749 If you change the defrost heater it is always good to replace the defrost thermostat number 18 in MQU1556AEW Unit Parts The defrost thermostat is part number=> 1-81801-001 The most likely problem is the defrost timer but I needed to cover every possibility. If you have questions please feel free to ask, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Area around freezer opening on a PDS20S GE

This is uaually caused by the condenser fan next to the compressor not running. Remove the cardboard backing to see it, give it a spin if it's not running. Even if it starts running with a spin you'll need to replace it.
Or If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too. check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Defrost solution didn't last....

If it does not defrost after turning the timer then the problem is further into the defrost circuit. If it does defrost when you turn the timer and that is the only time it does defrost replace the timer.
