Black is your hot wire, white is your common ground, and Green is your Ground. Be careful and make sure the switch is designed for A/C power

Which way do the wires connect to a 3 tab lighted rocker switch using black white and green wires

Usually the center tab is COM... connect Black Hot wire
Other two tabs are switched... connect Black going to load to either of the tabs.
Connect White neutral to load neutral
Green wire is ground... connect to green ground screw or bare copper.

Test wires to see which is hot and neutral

Hookup 3way switch from walltoswitchtoa light fixture

The first thing you should learn about three way switches is how they work. Once you know how they work they are so much easier to wire.

First:
All neutrals (usually white) are tied together, which means the light bulb always has a way to return the current to the source (a complete circuit).

Second:
The hot (usually black and red) is what is opened or closed by the three way switches.

0bc756d8-5777-4af7-a88a-4cb48593f5c1.png

The main mistake when wiring a 3 way switch is not to tie the common to the power source on switch one and not to tie the lamp black wire to the common on switch two.

Notice that in the position above the lamp will be off. If you move the toggle down on the first switch then the power will be connected all the way through the the black wires to the lamp. If you move the toggle up on the second switch then the power will be connected to the lamp via the red wire. Either switch can then make or break the connection that allows the power to flow through to the lamp.

There are also variations of this configuration when the power is supplied to the lamp first. or if the power is supplied to switch two, but the principle is the same. In both of the later cases you must use the white wire to carry power or the hot leg and is not the preferred method, but is approved by the NEC. Typically, when this is done it is common to place a black piece of tape on the white wire to make you aware that the white wire might be hot. If you need the schematic for these variations, feel free to comment and I will be happy to create them.

What are the color code of the wires to switch terminals

Almost!
the black screw is the "common" so the hot wire or the colored wire (usually black or red) bringing power in goes on to the black screw and all white wires (neutral) get connected together. you need to verify which wire has constant power when all wires are disconnected and separated first.

*White wires all connected together separate of the switch
green screw = ground or bare wire
black screw = hot wire/ wire with constant power
silver screws = (switched terminals) black or colored wire from each device being powered (eg. light) per screw

I have a 12/2 (black/white/ground) power source to the leviton 1755 switch. And, I have two (2) 12/2's going to a Broan 100hl (vent, light, heater). Please help wiring switch and Broan; on...

The switch that you have works like 3 seperate switches. most of these switches will have gold screws
on one side and silver screws on the other side, lets say that the left is gold and the right is silver, and
the switch may also have a green screw for ground. your 12/2 with ground is your main hot, you may
want to mark it with a piece of tape, so you know it's the incoming hot. the ground off your hot will tie,
to the green screw on switch and continue and tie to your vent light which should also have a ground
the white coming off the hot is your neutral, it will go straight to your white or whites on your heater.
the black hot wire at your switch will go to each gold terminal on one side of the switch, there are two
ways you can do this, go to one side and just run a jumper, or put one wire on each gold screw and
tie in to your hot-black wire with a wire nut. now for the switch legs, you will need to run from your, switch
to your heater either another pair of 12/2s or a 12/3, each side of the switch that has one silver screw,
it's easier with a 12/3 normally a 12/3 will have a red,black,white,and ground.
top switch red to red on heater, black to black on light and the white blue on the vent,so from your switch
to the heater you would have to run a12/2 you would not use the black only the white and ground.
remember the white-neutral coming from the switch will be tied to all the whites at the vent, light, heater
except for the 10/3. the 10/3 is used stricktly for the switch legs. good luck!

I have a Leviton 5634 two rocker switch that I'm using to replace an old double switch that controls two lights. There are 1 black, 1 red, and 1 white wire in the light switch box. The white wire is...

Review old switches:
Two old switches > each has 2 wires
Old switch 1 > Red and White
Old switch 2 > Black and White
The same white wire connects to both switches, so effectively they count as 1 wire
This means you have 3 wires ... 1 White, 1 Red, 1 Black
Each switch controls a separate load (light, fan, motor)

New Leviton double-rocker switch:
-Leviton has 2 Brass-colored screws on one side, and these screws are connected together by a brass plate >> your Hot wire will connect to brass screw
-Leviton has 2 Silver-colored screws on other side, and neither of these screws are connected in any way >> the wires going to each load will connect on a different screw on this side of switch.

Hot wire: Each box in your house has exactly 1 hot wire that is connected back to breaker box. This is true for all boxes (excluding boxes that have a 3-way & 4-way switches).
We need to identify Hot wire.

-By code the Hot wire is black for identification purposes ... but your box sounds like maybe the Hot wire is White.
-If your Hot wire is white, that is NOT an immediate safety issue ... it will not cause a fire or malfunction ... it is a code violation ... because code requires things be uniform so next electrician knows what previous guy did. So some day, electrician working outside grabs wrong color wire, and wow. I say this so you know.

Moving on.

Identify Hot wire:
-Pull 3 wires up so they can be tested
-Turn on power
-Use ordinary tester, or old lamp with plug cut off and wires stripped back
-Tape tester lead to sticks so hands are away from voltage
-Power is on. Don't stand in water or touch metal pipes, and you're fine.
-You have 3 wires in box + ground wire
-Test all 3 wires to bare ground wire >> when tester lights up, that is Hot wire ... testing is complete

Connect wires to Leviton double-rocker:
-Power is OFF.
-You have 3 wires - 1 White, 1 Black, 1 Red >> one is Hot wire, the other two wires go to load
-Hot wire connects to Brass-colored screws on new Leviton.
-Brass colored screws are connected together by a brass plate so the Hot does not need to connect to both brass screws.
-The other two wires connect to Silver screws on other side of new Leviton switch
-One wire goes to each silver screw
-Connect bare ground wire to green screw.
-Push wires back into box. Use eraser end of pencil if needed.
-Make sure ground wire is back and away from screws on switch
-That's it.

How do I connect a ge rocker on/off with slide dimmer switch? It has two red wires , one green and one black wire. Never seen this before. I want to install it in my dinning room. I have in my old wall...

You bought a three-way switch, but that's OK you can use it. Connect green to green (that's the ground). Connect black to black (that's either your incoming or outgoing hot wire). Connect white to one of the reds (that's either your incoming or outgoing hot wire.) The other red wire will not be used BUT you must put a wire nut (and/or tape) on it to insulate the bare end, because if the black wire in the box is your incoming hot wire, then this extra wire on the switch will be hot when the switch is OFF.

How do i wire a miniature rocker switch red/brown and black wires

Any wire that is colored is hot, except for green and white, which is ground and neutral, If you have a line coming in to your switch, and 3 loads going out, red, brown, black, then those should be the 3 lights. The white wire will be connected to white, and the green to ground. If you don't have 4 colored wires, then you have 1 switch too many. Let me know if this is making sense.

Triple rocker switch to control 3 function bathroom fan/light

I suggest you cut 3 pigtails out of your black wire (about 5-6" each and strip them so you can put a nut to tie them all together on the main wire, then do the same for your grounds using green 5-6" strips of wire and then connect all 3 switches with the pigtails to their proper locations. This WILL fix your problem.

House has two black and one white. dimmer has one black, one green and one red. WHat connects to what? THanks

Black wires are the hot side the power line, white is the neutral, and green is ground. On your dimmer, the black wire is for the AC input and the red wire is the output to the lamp you want to control.

If you are replacing an old switch with the dimmer, the two black wires will be connected to the screw terminals on the switch. One of those black wires is the AC feed to the switch, the other black is the one that goes to the light fixture. You'll need to determine which is which so you can hook the dimmer up correctly.

For a few dollars you can pick up a tester that lights and chirps when it's near a hot wire. Turn off power to the light circuit at your circuit breaker or fuse panel. Remove the old switch and disconnect the wires. Make sure the bare ends are not touching anything and turn the power back on. Hold the tester near each of the black wires. One of them will cause the tester to light up and the other one will not. The unpowered wire is the one going to the light fixture. This one connects to the red wire on the new dimmer. The hot wire is the feed that connects to the dimmer black wire. The green wire on the dimmer connects to the other green wires already in the box. Turn the power off again and make your connections using UL approved twist-on connectors (wire nuts), which probably came with the dimmer. Fit the wires and dimmer back into the switch box, secure it with the mounting screws, replace the cover plate and turn the power back on.

Voila! You'll have a working dimmer. A Google search for "installing dimmers" will turn up several links to sites with good pictures.
