Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I purchased a used newhome DX 2015 machine. upon bringing it home and checking it out I found that all of the stitches worked except the back stitch.. I messed with the back stitch button pushing it down several times while running the machine the result is that now it sews in one spot. It will not go forward and occasionally will pull the fabric through backwards. I have worked in a sewing and repair shop many years ago so i took the covers off to see if something appeared to be broken but everything to be in place.. what can I check or do to make it work again?

SOURCE: Upper thread brakes often.

It could be your thread is old, dry and brittle, always store out of sunlight and in airtight container to avoid this. You could try putting the thread into the fridge overnight to add a bit of moisture back into it. Or buy some new thread and try again. Also, always use same thread on top as in the bobbin, don't be tempted to just use an old bobbin of thread you have already as different colours and thread top and bottom will affect stitching quality.

If you are getting loops on the underside it also sounds like top tension is not right. Check dial is on 5, and always raise the pressure foot when you are threading up so the tension is open for the thread to go into.

Then lower the pressure foot and pull on the thread below the tension - it should feel firm when you pull it. Also revisit your threading up, it is possible that the thread is catching somewhere between the spool and needle causing it to break so check with your manual carefully to see if you have missed a threading eye.

Failing all of this, go back to the shop and ask them to watch you thread up and see if they can spot the issue.

Perhaps a manual would be helpful:

You should probably contact the manufacturer with questions. Hopefully, you did some thorough research before purchasing this machine. From the info I found, it appears to be a straight stitch only machine. I don't know anything about this machine, but I would be hesitant to purchase a straight stitch machine for sewing swimwear. Usually, swimwear needs a stretch stitch or zig-zag capability. Just my thoughts...

In most cases Laurie, with decorative stitches selected some machines can't sew in reverse. Your stitch length is too long or too short to make the decorative stitches sew correctly. So many things could be wrong. I'd need more info to get you going again.

My sewing machine will only sew in reverse

The stitch length lever on some machines will back stitch when the lever is in the uppermost position. Bring the lever down to an appropriate stitch length and your machine should stitch forward.

Can I sew a Blanket stitch with my Bernina 930 Record machine?

Once upon a time, a blanket stitch used to be a long wide zigzag stitch. If you are referring to an electronic stitch version that would look like the inverse of a blind-hem stitch, then no, this is not possible on the 930 record machine.
What is nowadays called a blanket stitch used for quilting applications requires the machine to stop feeding during the stitching cycle to allow for the single stitch to the left and then back again. An electronic step motor machine, common to all newer Bernina machines can do this and or similar functions. That being said, don't be thinking about getting rid of your 930. Better to get one of the newer units for occasional blanket stitching and keep the Swiss made 930. The Bernina 930 is a lifetime machine. Computers machines are not lifetime class machines by virtue of being computers. Electronics are short lived.

it's possible there could be a loose or broken part in the machine, and the cam that does the zig zag could be worn or damaged.
having it checked would be a good idea.

Thread becomes jammed in reverse

Reverse can be tricky if the machine is not timed correctly. So try this. after you've stitched forward for a while, use the hand wheel to bring the needle all the way down into the fabric and let it come part way up. Then push your back button and take your back stitches. If that works for you then you know the machine should be checked for proper timing.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I finally figured out that I had the straight stitch needle plate (the one with the single hole), rather than the zig zag needle plate (the one with the curved hole). When I changed plates, it worked fine.
