SOURCE: I have purchased a Utilitech

What you have a single pole light switch you are replacing with the timer. As you say you have 2 black wires. One black wire is the incoming power wire and the other black wire goes up to the light. On a normal single pole switch is makes no difference which of the screws you connect it to. Of course with the exception of the ground screw. Tie all the white wires back together that are in the wall box and shove them to the rear as they are not needed to make this connection. The correct connection is to connect one of the black existing black wires in the wall switch box to the black wire on the timer. Now connect the other black wire to the blue wire on the timer. The red wire is not used in a single pole connection and is only used in a 3 way switch connection, so just put a twist connector on it and shove it back in the box. To recap, connect black wire on timer to either black wire in box. Connect the other blue wire to the other black wire. Do not use the red wire. Hopefully you did not hurt the timer by connecting it incorrectly. If it does not work after setting the timer up according to the instructions you have ruined the timer by wiring it incorrectly. Hopefully no damage has been done.

SOURCE: GE digital timer. Instructions say to: 1)

Find the Hot wire:
Your switch has 2 wires. One of these wires is Hot, and one goes to load. Disconnect wires from switch. Turn on power. Do not stand on wet surface. Test each wire to bare copper wire. When tester lights up, that is Hot wire. The other wire goes to load.

Connect wires:
Hot wire goes to Black timer wire
Wire to load goes to Red timer wire
White wire connects to white wires that are twisted together
Bare copper wire connects to Green wire from timer

How to connect white wire to white wires that are twisted together.
a) Strip white timer wire so you have 1-1/2 " of bare wire. Stranded wire will wrap around other wires easily.
b) Remove wire nut. DO NOT UNTWIST wires.
c) Hold all whites together so bare copper lines up. Wrap stranded copper around the twisted wire.
d) Replace wire nut, or use larger wire nut. Twist real tight. Do not use tape. You can solder the connection.
e) When done, pull on white time wire to make sure it is held tight. Push whites back into box.

Only have two wires to connect to

What timer are you installing?

Intermatic battery-operated timer with red, blue, black and green
Green connects to bare ground
Red is capped off.
Blue connects to one wire
Black connects to other wire
Push on-off button: if light comes on, timer wiring is correct.
If light does not come on, then reverse blue and black wires.

Other in-wall timers except Aube have red, black, white and green
Green goes to bare ground
Red connects to one wire
Black connects to other wire.
White: in back of electrical box are white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut. Connect white white to these other white wires.
If box does not have white wires described above, then connect white wire to bare ground along with green wire.
Push on-off or override switch: if light comes on, timer wiring is correct.
If light does not come on, then reverse red and black wires.

Installing a GE digital wall timer. Instructions say" connect Hot/live wire of main to black of timer. Connect Hot/live wire of load to red of timer. connect white of (neutral) to white of timer. green...

Review:
Black goes to Hot wire from breaker box
Red wire goes to Load (light, fan, motor)
White wire goes to Neutral
Green to bare copper ground wire

Orientation:
Your original switch had 2 wires plus bare ground.
One of these wires is Hot, the other goes to Load.
You said original wires are Red and Black

How do you find Hot wire?
-Your original switch had 2 wires.
-Remove timer from box.
-Pull original 2 wires out where you can test them
-Turn on power
-Use regular tester
-Tape tester leads to wood sticks so your hands stay away from voltage
-Power is on
-Test each original wire to bare ground wire
-When tester lights up, that is Hot wire ... this wire connects to Black wire on timer
- The other wire goes to Load so it connects to Red wire on timer

How to test for Neutral wire
Test Hot wire to your white wires - No need to untwist them.
When tester lights up, that is Neutral
White wire from timer connects to Neutral.
Green goes to ground wire.

How to reset timer
I'm not sure which timer you have. Probably GE 15086. Reset is small round button below HOUR button. Use paper clip and push-in reset until timer flashes 12 o'clock.

Utilitech Wall Timer #0192773 does not switch landscape lights on? Replaced Intermatic that had 3 wires. Black to Black, blue to black and red was capped. Utilitech came with 4 wires - black, white,...

Old timer: Intermatic EJ500 & ST01C timers have a battery. Battery operates the clock motor. Red wire is for 3-way circuit [a hallway with 2 switches is a 3-way circuit].

Utilitec timer, clock runs on 120Volt circuit instead of battery. So clock has to have power.

How to connect wires:
Black timer wire connects to hot wire from breaker box.
Red (or blue) timer wire goes to landscape lights.
White timer wire connects to white neutral wire [or if no neutral is available, connect to bare ground wire].
Green timer wire goes to bare ground wire.

How to find black hot wire and white neutral wire inside box
: Disconnect and separate wires so you can test. Use ordinary tester. Power is on. There is only 1 black hot wire inside each electrical box. Test each black wire to bare ground until tester light comes on > that identifies the black hot wire. Next, test black hot wire to white wires until tester light comes on > that is the neutral wire. Exception: This test does not necessarily work with 3-way switches since they reverse each time switch is thrown.

Running 10/3 wire and wiring clothes dryer directly. The dryer does not have a ground connect for the bare copper ground. Can it be connected to the white neutral at the dryer?

NO!! use the green screw on back where cabinet ground goes red to red white to white black to black remove cabinet ground wire and connect it up to white neutral on dryer connect bare ground to cabinet ground screw ..but wouldn't it be better to connect wall plug to house wiring and correct cord to dryer? always hate working on hard wired equipment since a lot of breakers are never labeled or relabeled correctly
