Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router
Problem for Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router

Hookup with Vonage device

By cwhorton on Nov 11, 2007

" "
I have my DSL modem (Time Warner)
I have my Vonage device. All works fine.
Now, I have my Linksys wireless-G Broadband router, but no hook-up instructions.
Configuration now, without my router in there, is like this:
DSL goes into my modem, Blue CAT 5 marked "ethernet" leaves DSL modem and goes into "Internet" port on Vonage Device.
From my Vonage Device: yellow CAT 5 leaves "Ethernet" port and hooks into my PC.

Can you tell me how to hook in my wireless router? Thanks. Charlie

I am going to attempt to give you a solution here. But you must understand a few things before I begin.

First, I would like to clarify that if you have Time Warner internet service, you are on Cable Internet. Not DSL. (This makes a world of difference when it comes to using a router.)

Secondly, you did not specify model numbers of your devices. Therefore I am assuming that you are using the following devices:
If this is not the correct equipment, continue to follow the instructions but be dynamic and adapt my instructions to the equipment you have. It should be similar enough that you shouldn't have any problem easily doing this.

This instruction set is going to begin from a point that is assuming that we're installing all of this equipment from the standpoint of a completely new installation. From the ground up.

Let's begin.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNPLUG AND POWER DOWN ALL OF YOUR EQUIPMENT INCLUDING THE CABLE MODEM, ROUTER, PC AND VONAGE BOX. Do not power on any of the devices until instructed to do so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.) Connect your cable modem to the cable from the wall.

2.) Find the ethernet port on your cable modem. Connect the blue ethernet (CAT5) cable to the ethernet port.

3.) Plug the other end of the blue ethernet cable into the "Internet" port of the router. (Older routers used to also call this a "WAN" port.) It is the only port that is seperated from the rest of them.

4.) Connect another ethernet cable to port 1 of the router.

5.) Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the network port of your PC.

6.) Connect yet another ethernet cable to port 2 of the router.

7.) Connect the other end of this ethernet cable to the ethernet port of the Vonage box.

8.) Plug in the power adapter of the cable modem. Wait 1 minute for the cable modem to acquire it's signal and set up the connection to Time Warner.

9.) Plug in the power adapter of the Linksys router. It should only take 15-20 seconds to set itself up. (If you have made any configurations to the router prior to this, I recommend pressing and holding the RESET button for at least 10 seconds to give you a fresh configuration state to start with.)

10.) Plug in the power adapter to the Linksys PAP2 VOIP Phone Adapter.

11.) Power on your PC. You should have an internet connection with it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You see... As I read the configuration you described, I don't think that you're using a PAP2 phone adapter. You said that you connected the "vonage device" to both your modem and your PC. This is not possible with the PAP2 adapter as it only has ONE ethernet port.

I am led to believe that you are actually using the Linksys WRTP54G which is essentially the same thing as the WRT54G, but with Vonage support built-in.

If that is the case, then you will not need to use the WRT54G router. Instead, follow the instructions that I gave you assuming that the router and the phone device are combined into one device. (The ports will still be labeled the same.)

Download the installation guide for the WRTP54G from the product page link I just gave you. You'll find the link to the User Guide on the right-side panel. This will make everything clearer for you if you do indeed have that router instead of the PAP2 phone adapter.

If you continue to be confused, please let me know. DO NOT just give me a poor rating without asking more questions. I am here to help you solve your issue. Not have my rating decreased just because someone is too confused or lazy to ask more questions.

I'm happy to help you. :)

Good luck and let me know what the outcome is. (And please be sure to list your exact model numbers in the future!)

- You other posters (thus far) don't seem to be reading into the description of the issue here.

And you're also giving more information than was requested.

The individual wanted to know how to hook it up. Not advice on how to structure your password.

Also... Not sure if you were paying attention to the post the user made, but it would seem that they are trying to connect more than one router.

Do you see how they apparently have an ethernet port on the vonage box connected to the modem and another ethernet port connected to their pc?

That's IMPOSSIBLE as the PAP2 adapter only has ONE ethernet port. Not two.

Which means that they must be using the Linksys WRTP54G. It is a Vonage device...and it is the only one that your common user is likely to find that has more than one ethernet port.

Attention to detail, gentleman! :P

Besides... I don't see how your posts are any more thorough or complete than my own. Please don't confuse the user any more than they already are.

I don't believe the user has read the thread yet, anyway. At least...I haven't received any rating for my solution yet.

Guess they must've figured it out or something. So much for my time. :P

Actually, you do have hookup instructions for your router. The Owner's Guide and instructions are on the setup disk that came with your router. However, setting up a WRT54G is REALLY easy. The short version is as follows (in this order):

1) The DSL modem gets plugged directly into your phone line.

2) The Linksys router gets plugged into your DSL modem through a CAT5 ethernet cable, into the Internet port on the back of the router.

3) Your Vonage modem plugs directly into one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the Linksys router (like one of the computers on your network).

To change the settings on your wireless router you'll need to log in to the setup utility. The easiest way to do this, at first, is to plug into the router using an ethernet cable. Otherwise, when you first turn the wireless router on you'll see an unsecured network called "Linksys." Connect to that. Then, open a web browser and put in the following IP address "192.168.1.1" and you should get a login prompt for the Linksys router. The default ID and password are set to "admin." Enter that into both fields and login. You should automatically change the security settings so that you're the only that knows how to log in. I recommend using WPA-Personal encryption. It's pretty strong and the easiest to maintain (you can use any SSID name and whatever password you're comfortable with). One word of caution. ALWAYS try to make sure that your password(s) are a combination of letters and numbers. I recommend you take a word that's common to you, like tomato, and change letters to number, like t0m8t0. That way, someone can't run a simple dictionary or number cipher to crack your encryption (some black market network detection devices have this capability... sad, but true).

I hope that helps. Let us know how it works out!

from jack to modem (phone cord), from modem to router (cat5), from router to vonage/pc/other devices. you may need to contact your ISP for proper settings on the router.
