When you put the old lamp back in did the picture look OK? If so why did you replace to begin with? Yes, there are some poorly manufactured lamps out there, where did you obtain the replacement? Was it true OEM?

Testimonial: "picture looked ok but dark as it was before replacement. replaced the original lamp since picture was getting very dark and increasing the brightness did nothing. replacement says it's a Phillips lamp."

I replaced a lamp in a JVC DLP tv recently and was pleasantly surprised to find the bulbs heavily discounted via Amazon. I did have to take it out of the replacement cage and transplant it into the original one as the replacement didn't fit correctly. If your lamps are similarly on sale maybe try another. Most of the projector bulbs are being phased out as DLP is an obsolete technology. Plasma and more recently LED-LCD have eclipsed them.

Replacing uhp lamp and remove ballast with Xenon lamp and 55W ballast!

You are going to ruin the optics using a Xenon lamp. The ballast in the TV talks back via UART to the CPU. By removing the ballast the TV cannot talk to it and run itself properly. Also using a xenon lamp will give terrible color reproduction as its not putting out nearly enough lumens in the right spectrum. It will also bombard the color wheel and DLP chip with UV light and ruin those as well.

I have a mitsubishi tv model wd 60638 I changed the lamp. Tv works fine for about 20 minutes then I start to smell like something is burning then picture starts to flicker, what could could cause this

You have a bad connector in the lamp. Stop running the TV immediately and contact the company you purchased the lamp from. this is common in older DLP tvs but not in one 5 years old unless you have a lot of hours on it. the connector can crack and arc inside the plug and then melt and smell terrible. It usually very repairable if you can get a ballast for it. the plug is part of the ballast.

What is causing the lamp to keep going out on an 82" 837 Mitsubishi TV?

If a OEM Mitsubishi lamp was used you likely have a problem with the Ballast that drives or powers the lamp---the two pin socket for the lamp goes directly to the Ballast.

Samsung DLP Flickering

If you're certain the lamp is good, it's probably the ballast. The ballast has enough juice to power the lamp, but it's unable to maintain a steady consistent level of power, hence the lamp flickering. Changing the lamp may temporarily resolve it because a new lamp is more easily maintained than an older one, but if the ballast is failing, the problem will recur and probably shorten the life of the lamp. The ballasts cost around $70-80. Replacing it can be done by the electronically adept end user, or you may need a service tech. The problem with a service tech is that some may not acknowledge that the problem is the ballast especially if the intermittent flicker is not happening while he/she is examining it.
