Can someone please help me get my laptop working through HDMI cable onto TV on a sony VAIO VGN-FW23G. I need to know the process to do this

1. Check the computer for changing output (some computers use <F5>, <F8>, depending on which brand they are. I believe Sony uses <Function><F7> or <F7>).
2. Check what channel the HDMI port is on (e.g. AV1, HDMI1, HDMI2, etc.) - you need to know this if your TV doesn't automatically switch to the new input.
3. Plug the HDMI cable into the TV HDMI cable-in port.
4. Plug the HDMI cable into the laptop HDMI cable-out port.

5. Turn on the computer.
6. Press the <Function><F7> simultaneously ONCE. The screen should flicker and show up on TV.
7. Sometimes you may have to go to "Display Preferences" and select Dual Monitors or external monitor if your computer doesn't do it automatically. Repeat Step 6 after.

** You may have to adjust Display Resolution to 1024 x 768 or lower in order for the TV to work. After it works at a lower display (800 x 600, for example), you can adjust the resolution to the maximum the TV can accept.

My system doesn't work when i'm watching t.v.? It only works while playing dvd's..

"Doesn't work". Do you mean no TV audio at the TV? No TV audio from the receiver? No Video? Both?

MOST IMPORTANT: Is this a new setup or did the problem appear after working for awhile?

I'm going to guess it's a new installation with no audio while watching TV.

Generally, most TV watching originates with a cable box. There will probably be some sort of analog or digital audio output on the cable box. Connect it to the Aux In or Optical Digital In on the receiver as applicable. Select the appropriate input when watching TV.

The video from the cable box will depend on the box, too, but it appears this unit will only accept Composite or S-Video In. If your cable box has a higher quality connection (Component or HDMI), I'd run it directly to the TV for the best video but still use the digital audio feed to the JVC. Let the specialized parts of the chain deal with their specialties - audio or video.

Of course, if your TV has only one HDMI, you will have to choose which source uses it. HDTV would get my vote for it as it needs the best conenction for maximum enjoyment. If the TV has Component (3-wire) Video inputs, I'd use that from the receiver for DVD viewing. I have both myself and see no difference with DVD video between HDMI and component video.

If you lack the manual that speaks to all of this, go to retrevo.com, register and download it for free. It’s a combination JVC TH-C40 C50 and C60 manual.

JVC LCD TV (LT-42X688) input panel not working!

1. This TV has setting for the HDMI input that allows you to select the HDMI Audio or Analog(red/white wire) audio. Make sure this is correct

2. Most cable boxes are DVI not HDMI. If DVI then you actually do need to use those Red/white cables. If HDMI, refer back to #1.

3. The cable box has a setting to select the Audio output, HDMI (digital) or Analog(red/white cables). Just like #1, this has to be set.

4. Contact your cable company to help you set up the box correctly. JVC can probably help you check the TV

Setting up Unit

I called the JVC tech service rep. I went from the Cable box to the JVC unit with a Digital Optical Cable, from dvd/vcr player to jvc unit with a Composite Cable and Audio Cables. From cable box to tv with hdmi cable and from jvc unit to tv with componet cables and cable box to dvd/vcr with Audio/ Video and S-Video cables. This allows me to have the cable TV access and Surround sound in all mode. I have HD and Digital surround sound in three diiferent modes. Everything is working great.
Thanks for the opportunity for help just the same.

Sincerely, cthomas249
