Question about Singer Sewing Machines

How do I time a Singer Swing Machine - 5808C?

I've not tried anything. I do not know where to begin. I have taken the covers off the main body, but have no clue what to do.

Richard, I'm assuming that you're talking about the timing gear--the last gear before the bobbin basket (holds the bobbin case). Am I correct? If so, it's really a job for a technician. If you would like to try it yourself, you can probably order the service manual and the part from Sewing Parts Online; if they don't have it in stock, they can order it for you. However, before you do all that, a 5808C in good condition is for sale on eBay right now for $49.00.

Thanks, Matty! I took the machine to a Singer certified technician and he wanted$165.00 to repair it. He showed me the upper beveled gear that sits atop the perpendicular shaft from the lower gear base of the machine. I sent this inquiry before I downloaded a Service Manual. I am rather adept at repairing things--like fully restoring a 68 Mustang, a 37 Lafayette, a 68 Buick hardtop and such things. This machine is not past my skill level. Now that I have the Service Manual I think I can get it done. Thanks for your kind and helpful advice.

My first question on this is WHY you think your machine needs to be retimed? What is it doing/not doing that makes you think so?

Richard, what makes you think that your machine needs to be retimed? What is it doing/not doing that makes you think that? When you put a spool in your bobbin, are you able to get the thread up to the top, so that you can begin sewing?

Am considering buying a used Singer Featherweight 132q. Have been trying to find any problems that this model may have but have not been able to find anything, Please help.

I've been sewing for over 30 years,, my suggestion is,, let them sew on the machine so you can watch,, & even ask to sew yourself,,, let them show you what the machine can do.. they should be willing to demonstrate the stitches & anything else the machine can do.. ask questions like has the machine got any problems,, has it been resently been serviced,, does it have a operation manual with it,, has it been well taken care of? are there any scratches on it? are there any burrs around the needle plate,, use your fingers to rub over the needle plate to see if it's smooth or not,, even check the small area in the needle plate where the needle goes down to meet the bobbin... have they ever broke a needle sewing? that can cause the machine to go out of time..
good luck

Call Singer at 1-800-4singer and ask them, it is amazing that they do not have it listed in your manual and the front cover does not swing open.

Replace the needle thread tension dial

If the entire assembly has fallen out you will find if you remove the top left hand cover that there is a small screw in the casting where the tension assembly goes, replace the tension body to the correct position and tighten the little screw.
