Turns off after a few minutes

I would recommend that you take this TV to a certified TV Repairman. This is often the symptom of what is called a "Cold Soldier Joint" When the soldier around one of the componants on the Power Supply Board reaches a certain temperature, the joint breaks contact. This opens the circuit that is closed, under normal operating environment. The opening of the circuit is what causes the TV to turn off.
The TV Professional can tell you weather or not he can repair the circuit or replace the Power Supply Board. Normal cost of the part is between $50.00 and $150.00

Simple question, so far no answer... which of the modern tv types is/are safe to leave in a frozen cottage over winter??

None for sure, but the LCD tv's will be surely destroyed. Some plasma might resist , but it's really iffy - older ones appear to be more resistant from this point of view because of their thicker glass panels.

My Polaroid TDA - 03211C will no longer turn on. It was exposed to freezing temperatures and wondering if this could have caused a problem? The indicator light will come on when plugged in but will not...

The freezing may not have helped. But your TV had problems before it was subjected to cold weather. If you can find a hobbiest or a TV tech they may be able to repair your TV. You, by now have failing capacitors in the signal board as the majority of them are here. I don"t specifically remember the values. I think there were several 10 volt to 16 volt 10Mfs caps that are bad and there were three or four that were 25 volts at 470 Mfs. Also there may have been two 50 volt 33Mf caps. These were all in the signal board. The power supply will have two bad capacitors,I don't remember their values. You will need an ESR meter (capacitor checker) to find these. Be very, very careful when you remove these. You can pull the traces off the pcb board if you are not careful and destroy this TV. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.

Freezing temperatures effect on LCD television

It shouldn't have any bad effects on the display. When LCD panels get cold they may exhibit slow response time, like trails or a persistent display when action is moving. As long as you don't experience SUDDEN temperature changes you should be OK

I leave Michigan for the entire winter and there is no heat in the house, will below freezing weather hurt my lcd tv. Also can i store the tv in a flat position.

If you mean flat so you can slide it under a bed for example so it's not visible to someone looking through the windows, then that is fine. The easiest way to do it is lay a blanket on the floor, lay the TV onto the blanket on its back and put another blanket over the screen to help keep dust off it, then slide the whole thing under the bed.
The below freezing I cannot comment on, I live in Australia were cold means anything thats not over 30 degreess celcius =)
