Question about Crl Automotive Vehicle Parts & Accessories
1. Go to an auto parts store, see if the engine has any OBD II trouble codes. Fix as required.
2. My first thought is restricted air or fuel flow. Hopefully the OBD II computer can read those items, if not, find one which can; or just replace air and fuel filters. This will only help if one is massively plugged, which if they have never been changed is a fair chance.
3. Loosen but do not remove fuel tank cap. go for a short drive. If it drives fine, fuel tank venting is not working. DO NOT drive for any length of time with the cap loose, this is a great way to die a fiery de@th.
4. Take it to a car repair shop for a full diagnostic. There are many other things that could cause this, bad sensor, plugged cat con or muffler, slipped camshaft drive, security system, transmission problems, contaminated fuel, intake vacuum leak....

Sounds Like you have a faulty catalytic converter, and or a clogged EGR valve. you will also notice a loss of power and sometimes a odder catalytic converter will need to be replaced. The EGR valve is easy to remove and clean out the carbon with intake cleaner.
