Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a flat screen Phillips TV and recently the power light flickers (I hear a click) but the screen does not come on. If I keep trying after a couple days it will finally power on, however once I power it off the issue above repeats itself and I have to wait for a couple days again.

Most likely your power supply or main computer board has bad electrolytic caps that require some "charging" time before they warm up enough to turn on the set. This happened to me on a 42" LCD flat screen and I was able to determine which one - it was only one on the main board that was the bad cap - by using a hair dryer to heat it up enough by holding it in one area until I could determine which one it was. This helped a lot of people who were going to trash their sets because this $.50 cap didn't have a bulging top or leaks like they do most of the should look for that problem too of course. Once you find where it is, you can normally go on eBay and buy replacement caps and diodes to solder in as replacements...get a friend who has experience if you are not comfortable doing this yourself because you can wreck a good board with poor soldering techniques and then it will cost more than it might be worth to replace those boards. I'm in the process of repairing my son's 37" set right now where we think it is the power supply board and there is a slight clicking/chirping sound as it tries to turn on...had many bad caps but now we're down to replacing some zener diodes. Good luck! Dave

Testimonial: "Hey Dave, Do you think it makes more sense to just replace the main computer board first, and if there is still a problem go ahead and replace the power supply? I don't think I would do a great job at the soldering. Thanks again for any help."

I don't know your set and it's problems personally but the power supply is more likely to be a problem than the main board normally. If you google your set's P/N, you can find out how often this is happening to others and determine from the responses which board is the best to replace or repair. I can't get repaired boards for my son's set so I have to go the route of repair.

SOURCE: my Samsung flat screen tv won't turn on and it

There's a couple transistors on the Power Supply board that are probably bad. On mine, the solder joint was bad on the bottom side of the board that pointed me at those transistors in particular. Part number is FQPF9N50C. Also, you could get a refurb or new power supply board of ebay or send your board in for service (also on ebay).Or there's a "repair kit" you can get that contains 4 transistors and a couple caps I think. If you are an electronics junky and like soldering stuff, that would be the way to go... I just ordered the two transistors off ebay for like $6.

Is your tv less than a year old? You need to call Phillips and see if it is covered under warranty. If that is not the case you need to get a few estimates. You want to know if it will be cheaper to repair or replace your tv set.

First place to check is the power supply board. I have not repaired this particular model. I'm very certain you have two bad capacitors in the power supply. This is a classic problem for Philips flat TVs. The capacitors will be bulged or skinned. Be sure to replace them with same values. I would certainly gamble my time removing the power supply for inspection. Spending a few bucks on two capacitors may prove good. A working TV is near. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

Blinking light on 37" Dynex LCD

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps
