When the machine thinks the needle is centred, it is off to the left about 3mm. Centering it using the controls works but it is +2 off centre. I cannot embroider as the needle cannot be moved and it hits the foot.

That sounds like it's definitely an internal adjustment. The machine will need to be opened up and the left/right adjustment taken care of. Is this machine one that you can open the top easily, or is it the type that has the front and rear shell?
SOURCE: The needle constantly breaks while embroidering.
My foot does this with different thickness of fabrics, it will make the foot land in different, areas, sometimes making the needle hit the foot. Always check needle position before you start embroidering. once your hoop is ready, check the clearance. I often have to use a small roll of non slip material under the foot handle, the one used to bring the foot down. And I use this to adjust the needle postition so it will always land in the middle of the embroidery foot. There is also a way to adjust the height of the needle arm but that's too complicated to get into here and I've never personally tried it.
SOURCE: needle is slightly to left and so hits the foot.
This machine has a built in needle position adjustment.
Check your owners manual.

There could be 2 reasons for this problem.
1. Your machine is old and due that some machine programs are not functioning properly.
2. You are not using right foot for those certain stitches.
The solution for the first problem is to replace the memory chip of the machine. But you cannot do it yourself. You have to take help of the service centre.
For the second problem you can get right foot and your problem will be solved.
