Question about Tomtom VIA 1605TM - GPS receiver

Open Question

Via 1605, won't charge, even after replacing battery

GPS would no longer accept a charge, either through car adapter nor through 120V charger. Replaced battery with new one from newpower99.com, but the problem is still the same. Will not charge.

My 2 year old TomTom gps Via 280 will suddenly not turn on

Problem charging MAGELLAN GPS.

I found there are select 120v AC adapters that will work on Magellan GPS. When a working 120v or 12v adapter to mini USB adapter is plugged into the unit, the battery bars will be 'scrolling' and therefore charging.

When your adapter, or even USB cable from your computer, is plugged into the GPS unit, and the battery goes to FULL, it is NOT CHARGING. The battery bars must be SCROLLING for the unit to charge. In this case, get a different adapter until it works.

This was tested on a Magellan 1412, and may apply to other Magellan GPS.

Garmin gps powers off even when fully charged

If you're "recharging" via the car charger - you might want to try charging via USB jack on your computer - or AC adapter (if your GPS shipped with one) for 5 or more hours.

Many Garmin units develop this condition when used strictly in the car / cigar outlet power source. While connected to your computer, you should go to Garmin's website and download, install & run the "webupdater" software. When complete, your Garmin GPS will have the latest firmware and patches to the software (not maps!).

After charging via USB or AC adapter, your GPS should stay on. If your GPS turns on via a slide switch on the top, Slide the switch from OFF and hold in the ON position for 10 seconds before letting go of the switch. This should force a "boot" on the GPS.

If you're unable to get the device to power up, contact Garmin Support to determine if your device is affected by a a recent battery recall or if there are other suggestions they have to solve the problem.

I hope this helps!

Garmin will not come on. Hasn't been plugged in for a month.

Given that you've tried other chragers, it seems likely the problem is battery related - especially if you've already tried steve's suggestion. How old is your nuvi? It is not uncommon for GPS batteries to go down after a year or two as they are subjected to temperature extremes and repeated charges and discharges. If the battery is the problem, it makes more sense to replace it for $30 than to spend another $300 on a new GPS. This can be done easily enough:

The company that produced the video sells a kit which includes the battery and tools necessary to do this yourself if you'd like. See: http://www.newpower99.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GARMIN+NUVI+205W&Show=ExtInfo

I hope this helps. Happy travels!

Best,
Rob

I turn it on, logo comes on, and it turns off. I've tried holding the on button 8 sec, no luck.

With the limited information provided, a simple first step is to make sure the internal battery is either fully charged or is in a condition to accept a charge. When the internal battery's charge is allowed to below a certain level, it will no longer be capable of accepting a charge via the car charger.

The battery can be conditioned to accept a charge easily, however. This is done by connecting the GPS to the computer via USB port, NOT the car charger. Some Garmin GPS units come with a 120 volt charger that connects to the USB port of the GPS - this method is also an acceptable charge / condition method. Leave the GPS connected for 8 hours or longer (over night) and try to power up again.

I hope this helps!

Low battery, won't charge

connect the garmin to your computer using the usb port. It will start charging then. For some reason when the battery goes dead in this unit the only way to charge it is with computer. the car adaptor will not work once the battery gets real low.

Garmin 330 battery

"my garmin c330 will not charge in the car while traveling?it has a full charge when i head out but after 4 hours it shows low battery,i was thinking the gps was supose to charge with the car adapter plug in.my will not charge."

There is a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter power supply. If the cigarette is working then when you start the car the Garmin should turn on and when you turn off the engine the Garmin should shut down. If you are manually turn the unit on/off then it is not running off the cigarette lighter power supply. Check to make sure there is power coming from the cigarette lighter.
