Question about Sewing Machines

Hi, my machine does not allow feed fabric - everytime i sew it starts and gets stuck or if not the fabric does not move forward. what do i do?

I normally re-thread it and start over or manually push the needle down then use the pedal.

Are you sewing very thick fabrics? What kind of needle and thread are you using? Have you cleaned the lint from around/under your feed dogs? Are you using spools of thread or cones? Spools should go on the spool holder on your machine and unwind from the side, but cones need a holder and should unwind from the top. Have you tried cleaning your bobbin casing?

thank you for those tips. I will try them and i discovered that the machine foot does not move up and down as it should on any other machine. Please let me know if you have a solution for this as well. thank you.

I have an old Kenmore Convertible 1785 machine. It is working fine except it won't pull fabric thru. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Are the feed dogs in the up position? Is your fabric very slippery or silky? If it is you need to use a tear away for the feed dogs to grab on to I order to move the fabric forward.

Singer model 518....the material won't feed through. It wants to sew but won't feed cloth through. Thks

Be sure you have the stitch length set high enough that the fabric will actually move instead of sewing mostly in one spot.

One other thing to check is the presser foot applying enough pressure to the fabric so that the feed dogs can grab the fabric? On the top left side of the machine, there is probably either a dial or a push-type button. That would most likely be the pressure adjustment. The tighter that is set, the harder the pressure the presser foot will apply and the more the feed dogs will grab the fabric.

Check that the feed dogs are in the "up" position so they will pull the fabric through the machine. Are the feed dogs actually moving forward, raising above the needle plate, pulling toward the back of the machine, and then dropping below the needleplate before moving forward again? If not, then the problem could be with the feed dogs.

Your machine appears to be a mechanical model. If so, it could be the machine needs a good over-all cleaning and oiling--a couple drops of fresh, good quality sewing machine oil every place that metal rubs on metal (no plastic parts, belts...). Feed dogs are frequently affected when the sewing machine does not receive regular maintenance.

Prelude. How can I adjust a feed dog to go left to right?

Sewing machine feed dogs generally do not move sideways. They move only forward or backward. Embroidery machines will stitch in all directions but only because they use hoops and not feed dogs to move the fabric. If you need the stitch to go a different direction, you can try rotating the fabric. Free motion quilting uses your hands to move the fabric under the needle but the feed dogs are not in use.

How do I get feeder t?o feed fabric when sewing

Check the feed dogs are in UP position. If so, are they moving back and forward when turning the hand wheel (be careful if you have a needle in the machine). If they are not moving back/forward, it is either the lower shaft has slipped out of position or the stepper motor has gone bad and needs replacing. Your local authorized husqvarnaviking dealer should be able to repair the machine. You can find the nearest dealer at http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us
