Yes, when you re-install whatever OS you choose, it will give you the option to wipe the entire hard drive.

However I don't feel that Ubuntu is a horrible system. Most likely it's either just an older version, or was installed wrong.

SOURCE: issues with my compaq armada

Hello Mitchiko

This error message is often the result of corruption on your hard disk. Quite likely including the MBR.

This could indicate your hard disk is failing or just that there was a glitch in your system that caused your MBR to be over-written or corrupted. In any event, w/ an error like this, you're going to need to ...
(01) Test your hard disk to make sure it's OK
(02) Attempt to restore your MBR

There are some great (free) MBR tools HERE.

There's a nice article HERE on "How to Repair your MBR". The author does a nice job of explaining what the MBR is and how to repair it.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have more questions, etc. on this topic.

Thank you
BJ

Double check to make sure there is no floppy disk or CD-ROM disk inserted when you boot. If there is definitely no floppy or CD, your hard drive may have crashed or been corrupted. You can try installing Windows again, but it might not work if your hard drive is faulty. If it's faulty, you'll need to head to the local computer repair shop or have a geek friend help get and install a new one, then reinstall Windows.

HOW TO FIX YOUR DV6000/DV9000/DV2000/tx1000/tx2000
All the Problems described are Graphics Related..

Faulty Nvidia Chip..Both Intel And AMD Based Motherboards..Though More Common on the AMD..
The symptoms of the Laptop Powering on and Shutting Off Repeatedly..Or.. Powering On and Having No Video...Or... Power Strip Lights Up, Beeps,Shuts Down...Or..No Power At All...Or.. Intermittant Loss Of Wireless/Video Goes In And Out/Touchpad Slows and Freezes..
To Fix this issue, You will need to Reflow The Graphics Chip.
I will Explain In Full Detail As To The Correct Method Below....
HP DV6000/DV2000/DV9000 Compaq v2000 Video Chip Reflow Instructions
First Step Is Complete Disassembly Of All Parts And Components..
Remove RAM, Remove CPU, Of Course Remove Heatsink and Fan assembly.
Next Step is Insulating the Motherboard... You need to Protect The CPU area, The RAM area, Cover any plastic Plug ports.
Try to leave 1/4 inch area around the edge of the chip free of insulation.
To Insulate the Board.. I use thick pieces of Tin/Aluminum, you can fold up some aluminum foil (tin foil) About 4 folds thickness....
Now that you have your Motherboard Insulated... Make Sure There's Nothing Flamable Or Burnable Below the Motherboard... it will get quite hot underneath.
You will need a Heat Gun.. You can get one of these at your Local Home Improvement Store, they cost about $15 - $30.. You Will Use ONLY the LOW Heat Setting... I REPEAT..... USE ONLY THE LOW HEAT SETTING ....
Next You Will Need Some Coins.. Yes Coins..
8 Quarters and 2 Nickels... Put the 2 Nickels On the Bottom and Stack Quarters On Top...
Place The Stack Of 2 Nickels And 8 Quarters On Top Of The Graphics Chip...
The Reason for using the Coins: Using the coins serves a few purposes...
1) It Helps Transfers the heat Into The Chip More Evenly/Slowly
2) It Helps Hold The Heat Longer/Then Helps To Cool Slower
3) It Gives The Correct Amount Of Weight That Is Needed To Press The Chip

A Thing To Look Out For...
Hewlett Packard is nutorious for using the RED epoxy around the edge of the Graphics chip.. this epoxy is used to help secure the chip to the motherboard...
This is a process that is Hand Done at the Factory.. And Some Boards Will Have Only A Little Amount of this, Some Will Have Alot of it...And Some are Only Done On The Corner Edges....
If There Is Alot of This On Your Chip, You Might End Up Needing To Carefully (REAL CAREFULLY) Remove as much of this epoxy as able to....You can use a Razor Blade To Lightly Scrape This Off... DO NOT MISS AND SCRATCH THE MOTHERBOARD!!! Go SLOW...
Now Comes The Heating Of The Chip...
Start With The Heat Gun About 6 Inches Away From The Top Of The Quarter Stack..You want to be holding the gun at a 45% angle.. Aim the heat at the Edge of the chip, You Will Start Rotating Around the Chip- around the outer edge of the chip...then use tighter circles concentrating on the quarter stack, then after about 30-40 seconds, slowly move closer to the chip...
Never Move the Heat Gun Closer than the Top Of Your Coin Stack...Then Pull It Back And Slowly Repeat.. The Chip Needs To Get Hot Enough To Re-Melt The Solder Balls On The Underside Of The Graphics Chip Back Down To The Contact Pads On the Motherboard.. and this takes Quite Alot of heating to Do.... You Must Not OVERHEAT the CHip... It Is Best To Underheat it and have to Redo.. than to overheat.. It will cause the solder to break down and even crack/split.. causing failure forever...
This process will take about 3 minutes total.. Once you shut off the Heat Gun.. Leave The Stack of Coins On The Chip And Let Sit For Another 5 minutes..
Now Remove The Coins(carefull they might still be hot)
Remove All Insulation.. Reinstall RAM, CPU, Heatsink and FAN Assembly (and Of Course Thermal Pads or Paste.. Note:. If Paste Is Used.. It Must Be Silver Paste...
Now You Can Connect The Power Button Strip/ Video Cable And The DC Jack Cable.... And Plug In AC adapter .. You're Now Ready To Test For Solid Power and Video....
Upon Sucessful Chip Reflow/Rebake.... You Need To Go To The HP Website..( www.hp.com )..Click on SUPPORT AND DRIVERS, then select...DOWNLOAD DRIVERS AND SOFTWARE....Then either click the box to Auto-Detect System, Or Enter Your Make/Model Info, Once At The Page With All Of Your Drivers.... Choose The BIOS UPDATE Driver..
Choose The Newest Driver And Download/Install It... It Will Reboot The Laptop And Upon Rebooting, Your Fan Will Spin Faster And More Often Due To A Thermal Controller Update In The BIOS Update...

How to factory reset iMac without login or keyboard?

To factory reset an iMac without a login or keyboard, you can try the following steps:
  1. Boot the iMac in Target Disk Mode: Connect the iMac to another Mac using a Thunderbolt cable. Power on the iMac while holding down the T key. The iMac should appear as an external disk on the other Mac.
  2. Reinstall macOS: Open the Disk Utility app on the other Mac and select the iMac disk. Choose "Erase" and follow the on-screen instructions to erase the iMac's drive. After erasing, quit Disk Utility and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall macOS.
  3. Restore from Time Machine Backup: If you have a Time Machine backup of the iMac, you can restore the backup to the iMac after reinstalling macOS.
If these steps don't work, you may need to seek assistance from an Apple Store or a professional repair service.

Auto login in Ubuntu Karmic

Ubuntu 9.10 comes with GDM
(GNOME Display Manager) a graphical login program.
This is default login manager in Ubuntu 9.10.

c6eaf98.jpg

If you, have wish, to login automatically in Ubuntu
instead of the manual login
that you choose in the installation process, we have the new possibility.

Configure GDM to auto login a specific user:

(1.A)
Applications> Accessories> Terminal
When you open this copy it (when you ask for your password, type):
gksu gedit /etc/gdm/custom.conf

Enter the configuration values that you want to override:
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=laikexpert

(Save changes and close custom.conf)

(1.B)
Reboot your system, and you’re automatically logged in to Ubuntu.

Can I override the bios at startup so that it will recognize a new hard drive - for linux?

There should be no need to play around with your bios settings. Linux will install on a brand new hard drive as the sole operating system, or on an existing hard drive alongside Windows without any problem.

If you haven't already got a Linux distro, have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Download whichever version of Ubuntu you prefer (LTS- the long term support version is recommended).

When the .iso file containing the operating system had downloaded, burn it onto a dvd, or install it on a usb drive.

Insert the dvd into the drive and restart or switch off/switch on the computer. The dvd will then kick in and offer you the choice of trying Ubuntu without installing, or a full install.

If you're using a new, empty hard drive just follow the on screen instructions and Ubuntu will install as the sole operating system.

If you already have Windows on your hard drive Ubuntu will give you the choice of either erasing Windows or installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It's your choice.

Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows creates a dual boot hard drive. At start up you just choose which OS to use - Windows or Ubuntu. If creating this dual-boot system Ubuntu puts a (Linux) boot loader into the Windows OS so that Linux is recognised.

If you save the Ubuntu file to a usb drive you then have to change the bios settings so that your computer uses USB as the first boot device. Then restart your computer so that it boots in from your usb .. and Ubuntu will begin installing.

Whichever you use - dvd or usb - during the installation process Ubuntu will ask you how many GB of hard drive space it should use? You do not need to physically partition the hard drive. Linux will do it for you.

If it's a desktop PC you are using with Windows on the first hard drive and are fitting a second hard drive to install Linux on, or have installed Linux on the second hard drive .. and find that Linux doesn't appear at start up, it's because there's no Linux boot loader in Windows.

I quit using Windows many years ago.

My hp laptop is locked by ubuntu log in black screen,i've had it with ubuntu how do i remove it for good. [ i've had a horrible experience with ubuntu and i havent even seen it on screen yet]

You can either re-install as you haven't used it, or you can reset your password, or install any other operating system of your choice.

Arguably it would be hard to hate something that you haven't been able to log into or use at all, however I digress.

540 wont boot up

The hard drive could be corrupt, this will cause the operating system to run the error checking. If you had a virus, and it infected any windows files, windows will check the files, but if it can\'t fix them, then it won;t run. You can try to enter safe mode, tapping F8 at boot, you should see a option to repair or restore. If not see if you can enter Safe Mode.

In safe mode you can go to start button, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

You can also get a windows install disk, same version as you have, and put in the disk and hit F11, and boot from the disk, and run a repair from it.

You really should go to the website Avira, and download the rescue disk, burn it to a CD. This will run a virus scan of the hard drive before windows in DOS.
If there is a virus, it will kill it. But there is a chance it can\'t clean the virus and windows won\'t start.

The other option is to just erase the hard drive, not format, erase it with a program like Active kill disk. Then reinstall windows, all the drivers.

I have a single installation of Ubuntu 11.10. How do I remove it and install Windows 7? Have tried from the Windows boot disk but I dont know what my drive letter is as Ubuntu does not name it????

Hi,
You can use the windows disk to over-write the ubuntu installation. Just boot from the windows disk, and when it asks where to install, tell it to format the disk and create a partition from the unpartitioned space. Windows will format the disk and you should be good to go. Keep in mind, everything on the disk will be lost.

Can you please help me to fix my ms win ulti 7 to original ulti 7!thanks for assistance and help!

Windows 7 operating system also known as user development interface is the latest on the market as of yet should not have another interface environment. Prior operating development environment programs had several updates as means to improving a deficiency or malfunction making possible overriding an existing version on the compute with an improved version. However, the procedures of performing operations systems overrides requires both programs installed on the computer for occasional exchange features to be made as crossover functionalities. Usually operating systems have compartibity standards where for examples windows 7 is expected least compatible with windows vista or XP or millennium or 2000 or 98 or 95 operations displays. The type of operations system on the computer must have been providing with additional update software from the manufacturer else overrides are impossible unless deciding to change the entire version to another version similar as acquiring a new computers display environment. That is possible though would usually require for several hard ware component parts to be changed as well for copyright reasons. For example, if attempting to change the latest windows operating system like windows 7 to windows Vista operating system, the computer's hard disk drive containing the stored programs have be erase completely of content else would remain incompatible to foreign code programs. Thereafter an entirely new software system is installed on the blank disk to attain user desireeabilty. However also, a change in operating system causing change in hard disks may require change in memory devices since capacities are least predicted to experience adjustment alterations of such magnitudes. Finally the attempt to change systems would produce results only least familiar to the user as before. For example, change in operations systems on an original computer unless component parts were acquired to build one's own would require updates of several components least requiring over stressing deliberation.
