If the timer knob is also a switch that pushes in and pulls out to turn on the machine there will be something like a set screw or a clip behind the knob where the shaft enters the knob. That prevents the knob from coming off when it is pulled to switch on/off.

How to get the knob off the washer. Pulling hard not coming off

On back of the timer there's a little plastic clip with two "ears". Pull this out gently but don't remove it. Now you should be able to remove the knob.

How do you get the knob off the timer

Timer is not identified.

If you have spring-wound timer, or EJ351 timer, or E1020 dial timer, the the dial pulls straight off.

If you have rotating-dial timer, the dial does not come off. Instead the plate snaps off.

If you have plug-in timer, or timer module, or power pack, or box timer, this type of timer dial does not come off as general rule.

The timer dial has to be pushed in manually to get it to engage the gears (really hard to do). Now when we pull it out, the water does not come on.

The timer knob and or the timer may need replacing here is a link for checking and replacing http://appliancehelponline.com/topwashertimervideo.html
The inner knob teeth tend to wear off on the ge top loaders, so check that first. You might have also broke the screw tabs that hold the timer in place from having to push it hard.

Control knob will not turn to desired setting

the timer knob has a clip that will allow you to remove the knob from the timer. it is between the knob and the dial. what happens is the knob has gear like teeth that will become stripped out.it is easy to replace but alittle hard to remove. you need to get a small screwdriver and go behind the knob, pull on it alittle and you will see the clip, then use the screwdriver to push the clip out of the knob, then the knob will pull of and you can replace it.

Timer replacement

the knob, actually, unscrews. pull out the knob as if you are starting a wash cycle, and use needle-nose pliers to hold the back, and unscrew. i learned the hard way when i pulled on it like it was one of the other knobs and yanked the post out.

Removal of the timer knob.

you have two different knobs to replace?..is it the water level knob or the timer knob?
if its the timer knob you need to remove, look underneath the timer and you will find a black plastic pin depressed at the middle. pull it slowly for about 1/4 of an inch.

then you can remove the knob in the front of the timer switch.

in putting it back, install the knob first in the timer and then depressed that black plastic pin to lock the knob.

be carefull not to pull the plastic pin all the way out. it would be very hard to put it back in.

cheers,

on the back of the timer is a black plastic tab, you have to pull out on this tab in order to remove the knob. in other words you have to take apart the control panel to get to the timer just to take off the knob. :I
