Question about Peavey Music

1 Answer

When I play my peavey valve king 100 watt amplifier, it cuts out and all you hear is a scratcy, distorted, hissing sound. What's causing this?

I've had to reset the safety switch on extention cord. After a few minutes it resumes playing correctly but does the same thing over and over. I tried adjusting gain and overdrive levels, but it didn't solve the problem.

SOURCE: Peavey KB 100 Keyboard Amplifier How to remove chassis?

I figured this out myself. I was just babying it too much. Some tolex had bunched up between the metal chassis and the cabinet making it feel like it was caught on something. I used a flat edge screwdriver to flatten out the tolex, and then I was able to pull the chassis out the back of the cabinet.

Most of the time amplifier hum is caused by the outlet that it's plugged into, maybe no ground or there's other appliances on the same circuit causing interference? And sometimes it's as simple as a little internal feedback, certain C notes on the Guitar cause distortion with tube amps, the best fix is a $100 power conditioner like made by Monster cables or others.... hope this helps?

sounds like an internal connection problem. open access panel and check the solder connection is not broken or loose. Be sure the metal mesh jacket is not touching the lead wire as that would cause a scratchy noise and feedback, or maybe near the internal cable causing feedback

The voice coil on the cube speakers must be scraping against the magnet.Or the speaker cone must be damaged causing it to flutter at low frequency where there will be large cone movement. Try removing the phono jack from your musical instrument/ guitar and touch the tip of the jack with your finger. You will hear a hum, now turn down the volume and listen to the speakers very closely and see if you can identify the flutter. All the same you will have to fix the speaker or replace it. Have you ever dropped the speakers, if so the speaker frame could have warped causing the scraping noise.

If the guitar can "hear" the sound, the strings can resonate from the sound and result in feedback. Running at maximum gain is asking for trouble. That causes distortion which drive the speaker as a square wave and worsens the problem. Also back off the treble as you can have supersonic feedback that you can't hear but will heat up your amp.
Test by allowing the feedback and then dampen the strings... if this stops the feedback you need to move the amp away from the guitar. Being a passive pickup makes NO DIFFERENCE about the problem.

Peavey amp shut down

The output stage has a problem. From your description, I'd guess that the high voltage supply has failed. The low volume and distortion suggests that you are trying to power the speakers from the driver section rather than the outputs. There is a resistor that fails in some of this series. If I remember correctly it is either a 2K or 3K resistor 10 watts in size. If you have no experience with repairs, I'd seek a service shop that is familiar with these units. The part runs between $5-$10.

Make sure that when the audio from the speaker cuts, the headphones are still working (try it several times). If this is correct the problem isn't at the preamp or driver tubes. Try to locate the wire that is connecting the speaker with the amplifier. There must be a bad connection at this cable or at the speaker's coil itself. Try hiting with a solid tool (the back of a screwdriver for example) the parts and the connections (not the tubes, just the mountings) while the amplifier is working in order to locate a loosing contact. Once you find it use a soldering gun to fix the connection.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.
