You may be right. a piece of something may have gotten into the space between the wash tub and the containing drum. So when the spin cycle starts and the drums move around a lot then it jars the piece into the space where it can hit both. Sounds like you need to remove the wash drum and get the thing out. ...Did that sound easy? It's not... Search for instructions for disassembling your specific model to get a feel for the difficulty. If it is a front loader I would not even try it.

More than likely it's something like a wire from a brasiere, or something from a pocket that has dropped into the drum..
Use a torch, and look through the holes in the drum until you see the object.. then use a thin wire through the holes, to poke it to the front, if you remove the seal, or poke it towards the drain outlet, then clean out the pump filter.

On spin cycle sounds like change or rocks spinning around in drum.

Could be a bad bearing or something loose on the drum that doesn't rattle until you get up to spin speed. Look for something like pins, nails or screws stuck in the holes of the drum, or possibly under the protuberances (fins) inside the drum. Does the sound occur all through the spin cycle or only at top speed?

Whirlpool spin cycle rattling

Well, it just might be. :-) More than likely you have something in your machine basket that is loose. Probably a coin or something from clothes previously dried or washed in the machine. This is quite common, especially for folks who carry coins or loose objects in their pockets. Remove whatever is loose in the basket and you will have solved your problem.

I filled my washing machine with clothes tonight and it got to the end of the short cold wash cycle and had stopped running so I pushed in the knob then pulled it back out and then pushed it back in and...

It sounds as if the machine doesn't spin during the spin cycle. Normally the agitator stops spinning, fairly quickly, if the lid is opened during the spin cycle. That safety circuit includes a switch mounted under the opening and is set by a tab on the lid that protrudes thru a small hole in the top of the washer. The most likely failure on most Kenmore models is that switch, broken or loose, the tab on the lid broken, or the two misaligned. I would need the model number of your washer, located on a tag on the bottom of the lid to be more specific

Rinse and spin

there is a safety switch on the top...and when you close the lid it pushes down on that switch. investigate that switch and see if its just corroded or needs replacement...i have that same problem when i leave the lid open on my washer...then it works fine when i close it...so im figuring that your's thinks its still open. I hope this helps you out ! and give your wife a hug 8-)

Sounds like a loose screw/bolt/nut during the spin cycle

Hi,
There is nothing wrong with your machine. Don'f bother with the sound , You said you threw 2 pair of jeans, so its bottons are causing the sound against the drum during cycle. Finished your laundry and worry no more. To make sure, throw some another clothing asides form jeans, like shirts, and feel the normal silent of your machine.

Good Luck,
Eriez

Drum won't spin freely

Are you sure that there is nothing sticking through the holes in the drum like a nail etc or a screw from trouser pockets, it could be that the heating element has come loose and is scraping against the drum or that the bearings have gone.

Banging tumbler during spin cycle

Be certain that nothing got under the rubber skirt, pull it back and look /feel under it .
inside the tub are the large wiper arms solid and not come loose.
open the top access panel (3 screws in top rear )
and open the bottom access Panel (3 screws in bottom front)
Dissconnect power .
Look at the springs and arms that attach to the tub are they secure.
is the large stone concreate slabs secure.
move all these items and push at them all secure?
you can run it while open but the bottom has a switch on front right that has to be closed.
look watch listen.

Whirlpool is still made in USA, I think. Avoid electronic timers and geegaws you don't need.
