Hello, sounds like this will not be a homeowner capable fix as there are several possible reasons the trans is not shifting from first to second gear. In that transmission, Mechanically, 2nd gear is an intermediate band operated by a servo which pressures are controlled by shift solenoids. So basic daignosis would be to see if the solenoids are active before pulling the trans to take it apart for inspection of some key internal components like the condition of the band and the drum it holds as well as proper clutch engagement in the packs. Like I said, this is not not a do it at home job without GM automatic transmission experience. But before a teardown a bi-directional scan tool and a stethescope should be used to see if solenoids are at least active with the key on and a scan tool commanding the solenoids and listening to the case near the valve body to see if solenoid clicks can be heard before tearing into the unit. And another diag before teardown would be to drive the vehicle with the scan tool in transmission solenoid parameters visible to see if the PCM is commanding the solenoids to change and shift. Like I said, not a low tech diag. I was a Master GM tech and Shop Foreman for over 30 years building transmissions.

Pontiac sunfire shifts into other gears but wont engage

First, check transmission fluid level, if low may not be able to pump, may need trans filter and fluid change.

Can low transmission fluid cause the speedometer to not work and automatic transmission to not change gears

Adjust your TV cable by the trottle cable. Had same problem, changed fluid and filter then wouldnt shift. adjusted the cable, shifts great now.

Oil filter location

The oil filter on your 2004 sunfire is under the air intake hose. you take this hose off by loosening the two clamps that hold it onto the air filter housing and the air intake. Under that is a black cap with a large hex head on it, i believe 1.25 inch. that is the oil filter cap. take that off and pull the used oil filter off the bottom.

I have a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. I can shift into all gears fine but when I shift into 5th gear it sorta grinds. In shifts into reverse fine its just the 5th gear. I don't whats wrong, or how to fix it....

About all you can do at this point is change the oil in the gear box and have your shift linkage checked and adjusted. The grind is internal, and the transmission will need to be removed to be repaired. Most likely it's worn synchronizers.

1998 pontiac sunfire convertibe. when car is warm it misses alot as(seems like the tranny shifts hard into gear. only noticable when car needs to shift the auto gears. i find the fluid fill, but can not...

Check for vacuum leaks. Fuel filter clogged? Check spark plug wires and make sure spark plugs are gapped correctly. Get fuel injection cleaned.

Car is slow shifting into reverse.. it takes a second or two after i put it in reverse, and trans also does not like shifting itself into the last gear till it driven a couple miles

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid and filter?? If your car has more than 80,000 on it, it's due. DO NOT go to one of those Jiffy-Oil type places that just **** out the fluid. You need someone that actually drops the pan (that's where the filter is) changes the filter AND GASKET (very important). I might recommend an additive like SEAFOAM. I've had a few GM cars and this seemed to cure the problem for a while... Did it twice on an Olds 88 and it lasted 256,000 miles.

Oil leak

the round oval shaped object in question should be the canister where your oil filter goes ,yes there is a gasket on the inside that may have been broke or left off on your last oil change
