Unfortunately this is one of the signs of the unscrupulous times we live in.
This kind of infection is usually spread by miscreants sending random e-mails out to long strings of e-mail addresses. These rogue e-mails contain small programs called 'mailbots' or 'spybots', whose only function is to scan a user's contacts list and perpetuate the infection by send copies of themselves to everyone in the contacts list. The ultimate aim of these mailbots or spybots is to turn each successfully infected computer into an automated, remote, Spam Server that sends streams of often unsavoury, unsolicited advertising to everyone in the user's contacts list. In this way, the originators widen the ambit of their marketing reach by arithmetic progression, while keeping the location of their own servers relatively hidden.
The only option to you, I am afraid, is to save your contacts list, delete all your contacts from the previous account, open a new e-mail account, e-mail all your contacts simultaneously (apologizing for the intrusion and explaining the circumstances), to advise them to be vigilant for similar threats and, of course, inform them of your new e-mail address.
A few simple precautions to prevent further infections of your new e-mail account:
Never click on any links or attachments in e-mails from people you don't know.
Never complete any online Surveys.
Never reply to any unsolicited e-mail from people or organisations you don't know and trust.
Do not accept invitations to join Social networks unless you know and fully trust the inviter.
If possible, avoid even opening e-mails from people or organisations you don't know (genuine, communicators with a valid reason to contact you will have and use other means of contacting you if you don't recognize or failed to reply to their e-mails).
Maintain the old e-mail address for archive purposes, so you can refer to old e-mails there if needs be.
I hope this helps.
