Question about Sony Video Game Consoles & Games

My Sony pmc 222v stereo shows "no disc" when a CD is inserted, it does not play. Any suggestions?

I 'cleaned' the scanner 'eye' with a cotton bud and some alcohol.

It's possible that "eye' has weakened but for most of the earlier models say 1981 to 2000 manufactures used that laser to do multiple jobs. why not right? I mean it was already there, and it's main job was nano-meter distance detection. so detecting if a disk was there or not seemed a no brainer. Somewhere in the last ten someone's cousin needed $ so a couple big names stated putting in another detection device on the tray( or just under it. If you're in a position to clean your L1 properly means you were fairly deep into the drive. keep the screws out and dig just a little deeper. Other possibilities might be a slightly warped tray. Either it looks through the tray to "see" if a disk is in place or it looks for the formatted M1 startpoint on the disk it self. You didn't say it was just one type of disk So I'm assuming all disks... if not the tray or an unseen disk photosensor, then we may be back to the L1 being weak or still dirty. (frosted from a film left on it?) just thinking out/to myself. Good luck my disk listening friend....( I put everything I own on flash drives, just for that reason....8 gig is A LOT of music!) Hope it helps a smidge ~~SC

Did you check whether the disc spins inside it; after the disc has been loaded? If it does, and still do not recognize the disc; check with an other known disc. If that disc too do not play, the laser pick up unit is faulty, and should be replaced. If the disc do not spin inside the player; after loading it into; the Sled motor [the motor that spins the disc inside] is faulty.

SOURCE: Xbox 360 will not read games or dvd's

Wow, so many replies!

The open tray issue is normally linked to the laser itself. You do NOT have to replace the entire drive, as doing so may cause you further problems.

If your 360 is under warranty, send it in to be replaced.

If not, then there are things to try!

Open the console (using the various online tutorials) and remove the DVD-ROM drive. Open the drive and you'll have access to the laser. Get a Q-tip (cotton bud) and moisten one end with some boiled water. Rub gently over the lens of the laser, then use the other end to dry. Try the game again.

If the above doesn't work, purchase another drive assembly, matching what you already have. You could just buy the laser, but there's no point if it's something other than the laser (and you get one with a new drive). If you have a Hitachi drive, make sure you buy a Hitachi. The same with a Toshiba-Samsung. Keep the same drive type. New drives can be purchased from Ebay. For Toshiba Samsung's, either the MS25 or MS28 will be fine as the insides are exact. Hitachi's are likewise: any version will do.

Here's the good part: you don't need to mess with the firmware on your drive, since the problem is mechanical. Carefully remove the DVD logic board from your faulty drive (the circuit board inside the DVD-ROM itself) and get a Sharpie/Marker and tick it/sign it/etc. Something which you can distinguish one from the other. The boards will look the same and you don't want to mix them up!.

Set your board to one side and get your replacement drive. Open it up too and remove the board in the same way. Now put your board in this new drive, carefully replacing the cables (there are guides online for this too). Close the drive and try it.

Because you're keeping the PCB from your drive, your DVD key will match still and you won't have any configuration problems!

SOURCE: The xbox will play music, but not games or dvds.

I would probably have the drive swapped out of that thing, but if you want to try making sure you have all the updates that Microsoft has available for the Xbox that would probably be a good start.

Sony rdr-gx380 will not play any disc. always shows " no disc."

In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD. If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.

The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor. Also in some cases the central motor base can shift and so the distance to the disc can be more resulting in low detection. You can pull up the spindle to come closer.
Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

Sometimes I get no disc error when insert a cd in my sony cdp-ex100 cd player

Put in an ordinary audio CD and play to notice if the CD is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility that the laser head can be defective.
Now certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it is not read. Hence it will reject. So it is ideal to clean manually the laser head eye using a cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.

Hello, My stereo says "No Disc" when I put a CD

The laser lens is most probably dirty.
if you can see the little glass dome inside the CD player, try wiping it gently with a cotton bud soaked in a little Vodka or Gin (spirit) to clean the lens.
If a lens clean doesn't work - its time to choose a new up to date - all singing all dancing replacement model.

Teac mcd78 cds spin but do not always play

The lazer unit in this stereo is hard to get at, 2 circuit boards have to be removed to access lazer lens to clean it. Do not attemt unless you feel up to the task.

When you get to lazer lens, spray a bit of window cleaning liquid on a cotton bud and flick off the excess. then gently wipe the cotton bud over the lens. next use the clean end of the bud and gently polish the lens.

This may solve your problem. If not, there is a "cheat" you can try to overcome this issue... on the side of the lazer assembly there is a pot for adjusting the lazer power. Carefully nudge the pot anticlockwise a tiny bit. This will increase power to the lazer to help overcome the problem. **NOTE: do not adjust the pot too much or you may damage the lazer beyond repair**
