SOURCE: Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.

external USB Drives, sometimes lack Power to perform properly.
you can purchase a lead that splits into 2 USB cables, using the dual cable, into 2 USB ports, can sometimes remedy This.

SOURCE: I have an external hard drive, Toshiba 160gb,

Buy yourself a USB to IDE & SATA disk adapter from eBay fro a few $$$. Then open the Tosh case and unplug the drive and power supply connectors and remove it from the case - carefully. Plug it into the USB to IDE /SATA adapter and lay it flat on a non conductive surface and connect the USB to your PC should see it as a new drive. This will allow you to get the data off the drive, check for errors and reformat it. If you can’t see the drive from the PC then it is likely that the drive is fatally faulty.

SOURCE: external hard drive won't connect to computer

first of all you should try it on deferent pc , if its ok then thatleads us to insufficient power provided through usb ports , try usingback usb ports not the ON-front, and if the problem still try usingdual-usb cable like this if the external hdd doesn't work at all it might be the usb controller board inside the hdd cage needs to be changedif you cant find a similar one you may buy a new empty cage

SOURCE: My portable Toshiba 320gb Hard

Unfortunately, this usually means you have some type of hardware problem. If you hear the drive spin up and just never connect to the computer, you are in better shape than most. The usual tricks to get around this are as follows:

  • Plug it into a different USB port, preferably on in a different part of the computer. The motherboard's USB hub might have flaked out.
  • Unplug it from the computer over night and try again later on. You may have tripped a thermal fuse on the USB line and sometimes they take a bit to reset.
  • If that fails, then remove the disk from the enclosure and hook it up to a machine with a free port. If you don't have one, I use Aprocorn DriveWire 3-in-one Disk interface to get on loose hard disks.
Unfortunately, there's really not much that can be done other than this. Good luck.

Check to make sure that the FireWire or USB cables are
correctly attached and firmly seated in both the drive and
computer's FireWire or USB ports. Disconnect them, wait 30
seconds, and reconnect them. If the drive is still not
recognized, restart your computer and try again. If they are
correctly connected and your drive still does not power on,

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your "((motherboard to your hard drive))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Ur HD just got internal problem, when it drops it created more than 5 g of shock and might have dislocated the LENS ARM that reads the disc inside!

The only one that can open and repair it is the manufacturer themselves!

my advise is to bring ur unit to ur nearest service center to have them open it and repair the internal damage part, so that they could save ur data and unit itself!

Hope that helps u out!

Try hooking it up to a different USB port. Go to computer on the start menu and see if your computer sees it. Try restarting your computer with the hard drive already connected and turned on, the computer may recognize it then.

Dead pc

try to remove all external device connected to your computer. just leave the keyboad, mouse and monitor connected.
restart computer.
if still a blank screen
remove everything connected to your computer (mouse kyeboard and monitor) restart if nothing happens
open your computer and remove all devices (hard drive, optical drives, memory... restart,,, you should be hearing beeping sounds indicating motherboard is looking for memory. try putting back 1 memory at a time and checking all mem slot. to identify if one of the memory could be causing the blank screen. if both memory will not work try to use known good working memory. if you dont get to hear the beeping sound using a known good working memory. your memory is the problem.

Light doesn't turn blue at all

Plug it into another computer if possible, clear ALL files on it.
You must of been sending something to it when you flicked the switch, they would normally go off straight away.

(Backup on the other computer first)

If this does not work then you may want to see if you can see a usb stick in your USB ports. If you can it's a fault with the harddrive, nothing else you can do.
