Don't know what to try other than logging out of computer, and trying both jack for speakers and earbuds in the jack. Have no earthly idea what else to do.
If I understand your problem, the speakers that you bought and the earbuds aren't working when once they did. If you haven't tried using the internal speakers yet, see if they still work although low in volume. If they work then the problem is most likely the jack as you suspect. If they don't work, then you may have a setting wrong on the sound portion of your operating system specifically the mute function. My laptop has a button for adjusting the sound and muting it also. You can find the sound portion under your control panel.

Testimonial: "Hi, Thanks for reply. Yes, speakers on computer still work but they are so bad, wimpy sounding - which is why I bought the little speakers and earbuds. Is there anything I can do if the jack is broken, which I can't understand, cos they worked yesterday and laptop has not been moved in any way or is it kaput for my puter, cos it really sounds awful through the inbuilt speakers. Cheers, Karen"

Usually when you see this flashinf indicator it is a failing battery. IT maybe that some of the cells in the battery are failing and refusing to accept a charge, in that case the battery will actually damage the charger.
