You take down the fan at the top of the rod that it hangs from. There is a cover that can be removed and then how the assembly hangs from the mount will be visible and the way to remove it will be obvious.

Sometimes the trim ring rotates 1/4 of a turn then comes down to expose screws. If you could send me a picture of it I can explain better

SOURCE: 3-speed switch replaced with hampton bay switch. Only low speed works.

The cause to the problem was replacing a HUNTER fan switch with a Hampton Bay switch. Before removing the old switch, I noted and marked the color and position of the 4 wires. I then duplicated the connections to the new switch.

But the wire positions of Hampton Bay vs Hunter are not identical, therefore 2 wires
were crossed.

The correct way is to note the color of the wires with the corresponding NUMBER
marked on the switches, then duplicate this on the new one.

SOURCE: I can't find a replacement fan 3 speed switch for

Hi azwaverid!

I just had a similar problem with my ceiling fan, not sure if I have the same model as you (the fan was in the house when I bought it). I do have the exact same pull chain switch (K.T.E 2035080).

I went to a big home improvement store and the salesman gave me some 3-way switch and guaranteed it would work. The switch had only 3 wires, not 4 like the original. Can you guess what happened next? That's right, their part didn't work.

Being an engineer, I could not admit defeat. I consulted with other engineers I work with, and they pointed me to a "mom & pop" electronics store close to my house. I went to Centennial Electronics in Colorado Springs, CO. The sales staff didn't have experience with this problem, but at least helped me and offered suggestions.

I ended up buying a Philmore Pull Chain Switch for $2.51 after tax. This worked perfect! Just be sure to place the wires in the right slots. On my fan, the following positions and wire colors were: L - Orange, 1 - Yellow, 2 - Purple, and 3 - Blue (I just matched them up the same as the K.T.E. switch colors & positions).

Hope this helps!
Bob

P.s. The exact part I used was:
Philmore No. 30-9152 (UPC code: 0 38975 39152 6). The box says (everywhere you see a semi-colon is a line break): Philmore PULL CHAIN SWITCH; L-1-2-3, L-2-3, L-1-3, L-1-2, PUSH-IN TERMINAL; 6A-125V AC, 3A-250V AC; Made in Taiwan No. 30-9152; LKG Industries - Rockford, IL

Trying to disassemble. I'm nearly finished, but no screws left to unscrew to get the rod to come out. Any suggestions?

Don't know if the rod is threaded or not but if it is there is usually a set screw that needs to be loosen then maybe a clevis pin to pull out, then you twist it off. Otherwise there is usually 1 or 2 set screws and a cotter pin to remove.

There are 2 to 3 small screws that hold the ceiling cowl in place. Loosening and/r removing those should do the trick. The screws will be on the side of the top edge of the ceiling cowling.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

There are 3 small screws holding the cover to the base of the fan located at the upper most part of the fan at the ceiling.
Remove these screws and drop the cover plate down.
Turn off the power to the fan, remove the wire nuts, then lift the fan out of the support yoke.

I HAVE A HAMPTON BAY MODEL AC-418 CEILING FAN. IT

Your issue is most likely a faulty speed control. The part is integral to the remote receiver in the fan housing. You can purchase spare parts for this fan through Home Depot (Hampton Bay) Service at 800-654-0688.

The fan unit itself is manufactured by AirCool 800-896-4908

Disassembly insrtuctions

Get up there with screwdrivers and find out! You need that funky fanblade-driver tool first, but once you get the blades off and things cleaned, you can deal with pulling guards off and finding the key screw to the ceiling ball retainer, etc. Don't forget to get the breaker off before you get down to the wire nuts....

Or: Craigslist the old one and require the buyer to get it down.
