Polar express g gauge will not run. Replaced batteries, cleaned wheels on engine, but still no go. Sometimes doesn't pull at all, even with just the coal tender (no passenger cars). Sometimes goes a few feet around the track before shutting down. Any ideas?

Sounds like a track connection not completely together. Put a meter on various points on the track to find where it is not completing the circuit.

Testimonial: "Hi Jerry, thanks for the response, but this particular train is battery operated. The tracks aren't wired. The coal tender holds 6 c batteries and then plugs into the engine unit to power the engine. I did some tinkering and figured the batteries might be fitting too loose. So I inserted a couple pennies to firm up the connections. Also taped the plug to the engine firmly with electrical tape. Not as much power as it used to have, but is now working a lot better."

Led blinks when train put on track

I am assuming you are using the Lionel CW80 power source. If so, the blinking light might indicate a partial short or a problem with the motor. The reason I believe that is that the CW80 has an internal fuse, which will blow for near shorts/shorts. A stalled motor i.e stuck drive gear, can cause excessive power drain although not enough to blow the internal fuse and also cause the engine not to move. Also, If the engine has the neoprene belt on one of the drive wheels it might have come off and is jamming the running gear or wheel. I believe the Polar Express only has one neoprene belt.

Battery operated polar express engine does not work

these are all basically at the same time in sequence,

1. test batteries, need at least 75-80% power for train to operate at all. will be very weak but should operate. or use known good batteries.

2. next are the battery contacts. a lot of time the positive contact gets bent so far it either makes no or very weak contact, simply bend it back out very carefully to make better contact and clean it with a little rubbing alcohol of nail polish remover and a q-tip.
3. next would be the switch for continuity and then loose or broken wire.
after that you can email me for further help.

There is electricity coming from the tender of the Polar Express O gauge but the engine does not run. Is there somewhere to send it for repair?

Check with the store you purchased it from. If they don't repair trains they should be able to direct to one that does. You're not the first person to need repairs so they will know.

Guages when crazy. Now won't even try to start.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)
