The Bunn has a little stopper that closes the water drain port in the reservoir while the lid is open. You can see a little white plastic pin protruding up out of the grate with the lid open. When you close the lid, it pushes on that pin which causes the stopper to lift off the drain port, allowing the water in the reservoir to enter the heating tank.

If water is entering the coffee basket BEFORE the lid is closed, then something is wrong with that little stopper. It may have a chunk of debris on it preventing it from sealing, or it may be deteriorated, torn, disconnected, etc.

Only way to know is to remove the the screws in the grate and pull the top off exposing the reservoir, and the stopper assembly. The little plastic flapper disc should be seated in the reservoir drain port. It should be relatively flat (not wrinkled) and covering the drain port completely. Test it by pouring some water into the reservoir. If it drains out without you activating the stopper, then a repair is needed.

Move the lever up and down and check its operation. The arm must move freely and close when released. There should be no dirt or debris on the sealing surface of the flapper nor on the sealing surface of the drain port. Gently clean with vinegar as necessary. If the seal is damaged, then a replacement is required.

When you pour water into the brewer, gravity pushes the cold water into the tank and it displaces the hot water in the tank forcing out the hot water through the delivery tube into the brew basket and ultimately into the pot. This will happen whether the machine is turned on or not, it is a simple process of displacement.

With all drip brew coffee makers, water is lifted to the top of the machine where it drips into the coffee basket by heat--heat transferred to the water in the reservoir from a turned-on hot plate. While the plate is being heated above by the heating coil, the water in the lift tube is being heated below. The function works just like any old percolator type pot where the heat under the pot raises water temperature from below and making it rise up through the basket support pedestal where hits the lid glass to show its working and then washes through the grounds carrying brewed (liquid) coffee through the basket (perforations) and back down into the water supply at pot bottom...which gradually tranforms to coffee itself. .

In the case of the drip coffee maker, the water in the up tube rises because it has nowhere elso to go. It is a relatively small amount of water in the tube being heated (usually) by the hot plate coil, but the reservoir from which that water in the tube came contains relatively heavier and more dense cold water in large quantity and weight that blocks the heated water from going backbackwards toward the reservoir water. So as long as heat is applied from the hot plate, and there is reservoir water to enter lift tube from the reservoir, the water will drip flow out at the top over the drip brew basket.

So, make sure your coffee maker (hot plate) is turned off when adding water and the problem will be eliminated because no water will be heated...until you are ready to flip the switch to on, and brew..

Why won't my bunn coffee maker turn on

You should check to insure that the tank inside the machine is full of water. Pour in 1 pot of water at a time until you get water to come out of the brew basket. If you haven't done any internal damage it should be ready to brew a pot of coffee inabout 20 minutes.

Will not percolate. Water is poured, it heats up, no coffee brew

Bunn Home brewers don't perculate. They work the same way that commercial brewers do. Fillit with water, let it heat for about 20 minutes, then put your filter and coffee grounds in the funnel, pour a pot of water into the machine, put the pot on the warmer, and let the water run through. Then enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee.

When I put in, 6 cups of water, if the 10 cup Bunn coffee maker after it has sat overnight, it only expels about 4 - 4.5 cups. I don't think it can all be evaporating or being absorbed in the grounds can...

look for water leaks around pot. Otherwise do a daytime brew to compare your difference between the amount poured in and what comes out. Please note that less water should mean using less ground coffee. Suggest 1 heaping table spoon per brewed cup.

Bunn auto coffee maker two warmer, only makes about 3-4 cups

The machine will allow you to brew from 4-10 cups. It works on a displacement systems so if you pour in 4 cups of water, then 4 cups of coffee should come out. If it isn't, then get the model and date code from the bottom of the unit and call customer service. If you machine is 3 years old and less, it will be replaced at no cost. If it is over 3 years old, it will be replaced at a reduced price.

My bunn is too slow

Use the de-liming spring to clean the copper tube behind the spray head. Pour several pots of clear white vinegar through the unit to further remove lime and scale from the interior of your coffee maker. My Bunn is 24 years old, and the only replacement parts I've ever required are new carafes and the 4041 silicone washer repair kit.
