Question about ASUS K55A-HI5014L 15.6 Laptop i5 2.5GHz 4GB 500GB DVDRW

How do I remove the screw plate that holds the cd driver, Asus K55A-HI5014L laptop?

My cd drive died soon after I bought my laptop (Feb. 2013.) On the back of my computer, there is a small (1/4" x 1/2") rectangular piece covering the screw that releases the cd drive, to replace it. How do I get that piece off? What kind of tool, item or thing can I use? Is the little piece a pressure release, that requires that you push something, (there's a minuscule indentation in the center of the piece, on one end..) at the same time prying the rest of the piece? If I can't remove this piece, I can't replace the cd drive......Any help would be appreciated.

Testimonial: "Robert: thanks for taking the time to send the link. I had found the you tube video by Johnson, and it was great...my problem was the "tape" on the screw cover; it turned out to be a thin piece of rubber material (flexible, but not tape, really...) Anyway, I pried it off, content to break it, if necessary; it wasn't.. it was just very sticky. I swapped out the optical drive and it works great now. thanks again. lkh"

Take it back to where you bought it and ask them to check the Power Pak. But it sounds like the Hard drive has bit the dust.

Asus k55a-rbr6 Cd Drive not recognized in Devices and Printers, will not run any CD.

The Asus K55A-RBR6 optical drive uses the Windows built-in driver. The drive may have failed or it could have a power or cable issue. To check for a power issue, try ejecting the optical drive by pushing the disc tray into the computer. If the drive tray ejects and retracts, it has power.

First, go to the Device Manager and check if there are any driver issues identified by Windows. (Click Start > Control Panel (in the right hand column. Click on either System and Security > System or Hardware and Devices and then select the Device Manager. Expand the section for DVD/CD-ROM drives and look for a yellow triangle with an exclamation point or a red triangle with an x. Try to uninstall the driver and then reboot the machine. Windows will try to restore the driver. (You should alsocheck Windows Update for any optional drivers. Start > Control Panel > System > Windows Update.)

Check that you have installed the latest available BIOS upgrade (407), from http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/K55A/#support .

The laptop uses a SATA slimline internal optical drive. The drive needs a power connector from the internal power supply and a SATA cable connected to the motherboard. You can access these if you disassemble the laptop. You may want to try just replacing the drive (~$25 at many vendors). If the second drive doesn't work, then try replacing the SATA cable and make sure it's well seated at the motherboard and the optical drive. There aren't extra power cables in most laptops but you should check for damage. Alternatively, get an external USB optical drive to replace the internal drive.

I hope this helps.

Toshiba disk drive mk6028gal

The hard disk drive (HDD) in your Toshiba laptop is the component that holds all the files and folders you use.
If you are running out of room on the hard disk drive because of all the programs you have installed, it may be time to replace it with a new one that has a larger capacity.
Replacing the hard disk drive on a Toshiba laptop is a fairly straightforward and simple process, as you only need to remove one other component to be able to reach the hard drive.

Save a backup copy of any file or program that you will need from the original hard disk drive to an external device such as a CD-RW or USB flash drive.
Shut down the Toshiba laptop's operating system completely.
Disconnect the power cable if it was plugged in and then close the top screen lid.
Flip the entire unit over so that the bottom end of the laptop case is facing towards you.

Hold down the release latch for the Toshiba laptop's battery.
Slide the laptop battery out of the case and then put it aside.
Locate the screw at the upper-left corner of the case that holds the CD or DVD drive into place.
Remove the screw and set it aside. Grab the edge of the CD or DVD drive and then pull it away from the Toshiba laptop case. Set the drive aside.
Remove the four screws holding the large square plastic cover over the hard disk drive at the lower left end of the laptop case.
Lift the square plastic cover off the laptop case and set it aside so that you can see the metal plate that covers the hard disk drive.
Take out the screws holding the metal plate in place.
Lift the metal plate out of the case and set it aside.
Remove the two screws at the top edge of the hard disk drive and then the two screws at the bottom edge of the hard disk drive.
Disconnect the hard drive from the motherboard by sliding it out towards you.
Lift the hard disk drive out of the case and set it aside.
Push the new hard drive into the open slot and then reconnect the four screws.
Set the metal plate back on top of the new hard disk drive and then attach its screws.
Put the plastic cover on and reattach the cover's screws.
Slide the CD or DVD drive back into its port and then reconnect the screw.
Put the battery back into the Toshiba laptop.
Turn the laptop over and open up the screen.
Power the computer on. Insert the recovery disk that came with the Toshiba laptop into the CD or DVD drive.
Follow the operating system installation instructions that will appear on the screen.
Transfer the backup copies of the files you saved earlier from the external device to the new hard drive.
