Lens will not extend when turned on message on screen lens error

Hi,

This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed due sand, dust or may be due to external shock caused by dropping the device.
  • Try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun around lens barrel. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on this will solve the problem.
  • You can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
  • You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.

If motor is running but lens won't retract sometimes lens would slip off with the gear or break off a tooth in the gear when it gets dropped. Try to gently move the lens barrel around with the finger and see if it is moving, but if tooth or gear is broken lens will move once or twice then it will stuck again.

Else your camera need to be disassembled to get at the focusing ring at Service Center.

Thanks and have a nice day

My camera says lens error, restart camera

Digital cameras are extremely popular. However, with many cameras you will at one point be faced with a lens problem, more commonly known as the E18 error or lens error. It manifests by thethe screen. The lens either gets stuck in the extended position, or it tries to extend, fails, and then retracts. Here are ideas on how to repair the problem:
1. Call the manufacturer and/or visit their website to see if they will repair you camera. There arewill just send it to the manufacturer and then charge you more than what the manufacturer would charge. If you are in warranty, don't go to a store, call the manufacturer first.
Repair it yourself only if your camera is out of warranty, or if the manufacturer refuses to repair it for free, which may happen if, for example, they decide the damage was caused by abuse or neglect.
2. First, make sure your camera has fresh batteries and it is in recording mode.
3. Remove the batteries from the camera, wait for a couple of minutes, then put them back in and turn the camera on.
4. Try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun and dry compressed air (20 lbs) set the tip between the lens turret and the camera body and turn on the air while moving the tip around the lens. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on and it should function fine.
5. Another method is to tap the padded USB cover part on a hard surface, for example, a desk. Sounds simple, but it works.
6. Place the camera on it's back and look at the lens from its side. It may look slightly crooked. If this is the case, power up your camera and apply pressure gently to the side of the lens to center it. It should then extend fully.
7. Try forcing the camera lens. Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a click as it pops back into place. If the lens is stuck at an angle, put the edge of the lens not the flat front, on the edge of a table and press the lens back towards the center. It will either click back in place and work or it will break off one of the three pins that ride in the grooves of the lens barrel. Try powering the camera back on.
8. If the lens doesn't extend at all or it extends and then retracts again, do the following. Turn the camera off. Take the camera in one hand and with the other gently take one part of the lens and gently move it round in a circular movement. Do so with both sections of the lens. You will hear a click as it pops back in place. Power the camera on.
9. Another version of this fix would be to pull and twist on the largest ring of the lens while turning the camera on. Listen for a click. If at first the focus seems to be off, turn the camera on and off and take lots of pictures, close ups and distance. Focus should slowly start improving.
10. If none of the methods work, you can dismantle the camera and try to clean the lens. A good guide on dismantling Canon digital cameras with pictures can be found in the external links.

I have a canon powershot SD13001S and whenever i turn it on it says lens error how do i get it to work?

Hi,
This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed. What you can try to do is spray some compressed air into the lens to try to free up any sand or dust that may have worked its way in. If that doesn't help, you can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
or.......
You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.
Avoid applying pressure to the lens and surrounding area:
1) Do not touch Lens while shooting. 2) Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case.
If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera OFF and then on again then your device need to be repaired.

Rating the solution is highly appriciated...Good Luck.

There is a focuing ring with electromagnets on it, and it swivels to focus. When sand, dirt, lint, or dust works its way into the lens assembly, it can get stuck, failing to focus.
Spray some compressed air into the lens area to try to dislodge it. Then bump it gently if the compressed air doesn't work. Here is a list of things you can try for a jammed lens:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
If these don't work, your focus ring is jammed and you will have to fix it or have it serviced. Get an estimate first, since the cost of repair often justifies buying a new camera.
Good luck, these tips might help you.

Here is a quick fix to try. If you attempted to remove the focus error doing the 3 times on and off, and it didnb't help to this. Power the camera on, you will hear the gear skipping as if it is slipping. Right at the moment you turn of the camera push the lens in manually slightly and gently. This will reposition the timing of the lens to focus. This usually fixes the Focus error when the lens is stuck in the out position and never retracts. I have had this happen twice, and it cleared both times by doing this. Good Luck

Lens stuck out

The lens probably has some dirt or grime stuck in the lens motor. If you can gently twist the lens back and forth, maybe with some air.

I have answered this in another post. Here is the link.

If this helps you, please return and choose FixYa! ThankYa!
