SOURCE: vcr won't record tv
Connect the antenna to the antenna In on the VCR and tune the channels with the VCR. Leave the 3 colored cord connected the way it is. Once you are able to tune the stations with your VCR, try to record.

If I may offer an unconventional solution in addition to the initial post...
Connect all TV, VCR and DVD Recorder as to any way you want to connect them or as otacon have posted.
However, from your cable input from your provider, use a 3-way splitter. Connect the 3 outputs to the individual ANT INput of each of the 3 units (assuming all 3 have Cable/ANT INputs).
With this method all 3 can receive TV signals, both the VCR and DVD-R can record (even simultaneously) and you can switch watching one program on the TV, while recording another program in either the VCR or DVD-R or both.

Does your set have compatible connectors on the rear of it? Did you read the instruction manuals that came with the new equipment? Did you ask your dealer???

You can ONLY record to the INTERNAL drive, there is NO facility to do as you wish. You could of course, using a TV/Video capture card, and suitable DVR software, and a PC, and IF your TV has a "Monitor Out" Composite Video Yellow, & Audio, Red & White. then you could stream the Video & Audio, to the TV/Video capture cards Inputs, and save, as a Video Format to the Hard drive IN the PC, or to an External drive, or whatever you wanted to. That's the only way I know of doing what you want.
