Check the scanner glass for ink or lint residue. This is what normally causes lines on faxed and scanned documents and pictures. Here is a link to explains it and shows where to check for the residue.

Dear Donna,
When a document is scanned from the top portion of the printer, it will loop around and output from underneath. The scanning glass on the far left side will have some debris on it. Lift the the lid exposing the glass portion, inspect for "stuff" on the glass, perhaps pen or white out. You can use a mild soap and lightly dampened cloth to remove any debris.
Good Luck,

Does canon pixma mx 310 work faxing page up or page down?

When using the ADF load the document with the side you want to copy, fax or scan facing UP in the ADF.

When using the platen glass load the document with the side to be copied, faxed or scanned facing DOWN on the platen glass.

Trust this helpful.

Blank line down left side of outgoing fax or feeder copy

The most common cause of blank (void) lines on a scanned document is from whiteout on the glass where the page is scanned when using the document feeder.
If there is a clear mylar sheet on the bottom of the document feeder, the whiteout may be there instead.

If there was dirt or a dark smudge on the glass (or mylar), it would show up as a black line, but whiteout is white, and shows up as a void (blank) line.

On sending a fax the receiver copy has a black

You must clean the glass strip that the origional passes over to be scanned. You may have White-Out or an Ink smuge on it. Another way to determine if it is your FAX is to put in an original and make a copy. If the line is on your copy than it is your scanner **** (glass).

If you use the automatic document feeder to make a copy, do you see the same line? If so, the scanner glass needs to be cleaned. Not the entire glass, just the small area to the left side that scans paper as it is fed through the automatic sheet feeder. Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with plain water to remove any material on this area of the scanner glass.

Troubles with copying

Pull the Top Loading Document Feeder up towards you from the back, to open and view the clear strip (perspex). I also had this problem, and fixed it by cleaning this strip. for future reference don't use whiteout on papers your going to fax/copy ;)
