Question about Garbage Disposals

1 Answer

Garbage disposal electrical shock.

I experienced a shock from the mouth of my garbage disposal. I checked with a volt meter and it was 20 volts. My house is 10 yrs old build to code. My plumbing is plastic, so no short their. My disposal is connected to a plug that is controlled by a wall switch. Experienced the shock when the unit was off, so no electricity running to it?? Checked plug, when off no juice. I unplugged unit, plugged back in next day no shock.

Are you sure it wasn't a static electric shock, rather than AC? If you live in a dry climate, or in a cold climate without a humidifier, and you may have walked across a carpet, it could have been a spark of static electricity. Especially if it hasn't reoccured.

Testimonial: "I thought of that when my wife first told me of the problem. But when I checked it, it was a continuing release of electricity. It continued until unplugged."

The next thing I'd check is to see that the circuit and the disposal are properly grounded. Good luck.

SOURCE: Garbage disposal runs but will not take garbage down

can you turn it on for me? I would like to see and hear whats going on to better help diagnose, more than likely the "blade" that spins has detached from the disposal motor assembly or the "blade" my be caught/stuck in place, to resolve this issue.
Unplug the disposal(should be plugged in under the sink)Grab a bucket to place under sink to catch waterremove the sink pipe assembly+disposal (remove the disposal)the water should drain into the bucket from the sink.remove and clean the disposal trap, looking for obstructions while you do so.after cleaning and searching for obstruction, reassemble the unit as it was making sure to reinstall all washers, guards and bolts, after you reassemble the unit plug it back in and test it, if you get the same results then there may be a strong possibility the unit suffers from a defect or damage in which case you may need to replace the whole unit or just part it all depends... good luck... more question just ask

SOURCE: why my disposal won't turn off

Sounds like the disposal is plugged into the wrong outlet. Try moving to the other socket on the wall plate.

Robert,
Garbage disposals are not designed to take ALL of your garbage... and DO NOT use one if you are on a septic system!!
If it is not working, check for voltage to the switch, from the switch to the disposal,,if you have voltage to the disposal, some have a reset on the disposal..

Check switch. replace switch. If switch checks out, then replace disposal to avoid risk of overheating and in-wall short.
