Check your keyboard. Some have volumne keys that permit up and down volumne adjustment.- If not, , ckin the control pane for other settings under Souds. Master Volumne,, mixer and balance are adjustable. Good Luck- Ned
I'm the author of the question - I fixed it by yanking out the earbuds, taking a call and reducing the volumne down from max with the earbuds unplugged. After that, I was able to adjust the phone call volume with the earbuds (JVC HAFX32A Marshmallow Earbuds) plugged in.
Can this system be enabled/adjusted by a wireless remote? If so someone else in the house might be using a tv/stereo remote on the same frequency. Possibly even your neighbor's garage door opener.

Go to the menu and select audio. Make sure the speakers are ON. some times it can get turned off. another thing about that set is sometimes the micro will lock up. Just unplug it and plug it back in and see if the sound comes back.
I bought two for $10 plus shipping from buyitnowstore.com. The remaining metal piece from the plastic "clutch" is hard to remove and I have not figured that out yet.
I would spring for the clip. Mine broke in the same manner but no one told me it could be fixed, so I got a different camera. I have NEVER had a camera that took such great photos as my Z85, and wish I had hung onto it.
