Question about Harman Kardon Harman HK 990 Amplifier

2 Answers

I have a Harman Kardon HK990 which throws an error #005 if I switch it on with a digital input connected. If digital input is not connected, it turns on without any error and all buttons work as expected - like switching inputs, speaker settings etc. But there is no sound for any inputs including processor bypass in direct mode. I have read about an IC SRC 4392 as a potential problem. If that is indeed the case, what is the solution? Just buying a new SRC 4392 and replacing the existing one will solve the problem? I don't have access to Harman Kardon support and trying to get it repaired with someone else. If someone can help me with instructions it will be a great help for me in recovering my investment on an amp which I have not been able to use even once. I bought it used.

Thanks Mark. I have tried one of the optical inputs. Since all the digital inputs are controlled by SRC 4392(as per what I have read so far) I thought all digital inputs will have the same problem. I have tried the firmware reset multiple times and it didn't solve the problem and that is the reason I thought there is a bigger hardware issue. Yes, I have the service manual, but I am no expert in this to understand and fix it myself.

1.Is the fault caused by an optical or coaxial input or both?

2. Have you tried a Firmware Reset? (press "Level Settings" button & "Speaker 1" together.

3.Do you have a Service Manual (I have pdf!)

I have a Harman Kardon HK990 which throws an error #005 if I switch it on with a digital input connected. If digital input is not connected, it turns on without any error and all buttons work as expec

If you had a bad amplifier, as suggested, the unit would most likely have a condition known as DC Offset. In this case, the amp would immediately shut off. As you said, the amp stays on, but you have no sound. First thing I suggest, turn the unit off. Listen carefully to the top of the amp. When you first push the power button, you should immediately hear one click, followed by a second click, within 5-20 seconds. If you hear that second click, you amp is likely not bad. If you don't, then you do most likely have a blown amp, with engages the DC Protection circuit to the microprocessor(computer within your unit).

Next step is to open your owner's manual. In there, you will find a procedure called, "Return to factory reset, or default". Follow that procedure, to reset the unit back to the factory settings. Those inputs are assignable, meaning that you can make certain inputs, analog or digital. You may have set one wrong by mistake. The reset will fix that. If you need more assistance, or would like to inquire about a repair, please visit my website at, Audioserviceclinic.com. By the way, I worked for HK, JBL and Infinity. Thank you.

The inputs may be assignable on the Harman Kardon. Make sure you have selected the proper analog or digital input type for the cable you are using. How are you? For HK990,How to do bi-wiring connection of the speakers? thanks

Sabve your money - it's BUY-wiring.

http://www.harmankardon.com/EN-US/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?PID=HK+990

http://www.harmankardon.com/resources/Brands/harmankardon/Products/ProductRelatedDocuments/en-US/OwnersManual/HK%20990_OM.pdf

Bi-wiring does nothing but make you use twice as much speaker wire for the same electrical effect. Bi-amping assumes there are deficiencies in your electronics that must be worked around, again by using more speaker wire and separate amps.

Do some reading on the web about "bi-wiring".

It runs so hot why?

Possibly lack of ventilation or excessive volume through difficult speaker loads.

http://media.onecall.com/Image_Products/Harman%20Kardon/harman-kardon-hk990.pdf

See page 6.

IMPORTANT: When connecting two pairs of speakers, determine the impedance of each pair

by looking on the back of the speakers, in your owner's manual, or by contacting your dealer or manufacturer.

You can listen to two pairs of speakers at the same time ONLY if the impedance of EACH speaker is NOT LESS THAN 8 Ohms.

WARNING: Do not play sets of speakers simultaneously except as recommended above.
Amplifier may overheat.

No gots. The 3485 is pre-digital stereo-only.

From the manual, page 19

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."

Have digital feed connected (white, red, yellow) to DVD connections 6 & 13. Get picture but no sound. Sound is OK on VID1 input from satelite. Any ideas?

so you have the yellow out from dvd player to yellow in on the receiver (composite video) and the red and white out from dvd player to red and white in on the receiver (right and left audio channel) . you can also plug in the orange rca (digital coaxial audio) go to your menu on the Haman Kardon receiver and make sure you select the right audio input. mine is a Harman Kardon AVR146 push th osd (on screen display) on the remote. go ti the input setup and select the appropriate audio input
