If your hot water heater shorted out it should have tripped your breaker. If your breaker is rated too high and the wires got too hot then you may smell the plastic insulation on the wires burning off before the breaker tripped. If you turn the breaker back on and it trips again, you may need a new hot water heater installed by a qualified professional.

No. A water heater is a sealed system it needs to be addressed for the original problem. High sulfur content has been a complaint as far as smell, and I remove the anode and replace with a brass plug because of. Shallow wells in the area largest complaints.

Easy way to replace it

Replacing a water heater is no very difficult if you follow the steps.
1. If it is electric turn of the breaker and check to be sure it is the right breaker. If it is gas turn off the valve close to the water heater.
2. Turn off both the hot water and cold water valves
3. Drain all water out of the heater.
4. Disconnect the electric wiring if electric and if gas disconnect the gas line.
5. Disconnect both water lines which may have to be cut depending on how they are connected.
6. Now you can remove the water heater and discard.
7. Place new heater where old one was removed and reconnect both water lines and be sure you have a new pressure valve installed on the water heater.
8. At this point you can turn on water and check for leaks. you should also open a hot water faucet to purge the air out.
9. If no leaks go ahead and hook up the electric or gas lines and if gas is used turn it on and check for leaks using a leak detector or a spray bottle of soapy water and look for bubbles. If no leaks you can go ahead and light the heater according to its instructions.
10. If electric is used turn it on.
11. Take a long hot shower.

AE 125 Just Stopped Working Altogether,,,Still Has Power But No Light Or Hot Water?

Turn circuit breakers fully off and then back on.
Use nose to smell for burning inside main panel.
Make sure you are getting 240Volt and not just 120V from one leg of the breaker.
Do stress test on breaker panel.

Will not stay lit also puts out black smoke

You posted under electric heater.
1) If your electric heater is putting out black smoke, turn off circuit breaker immediately and call plumber.

2) If you have gas water heater, look at label on side of tank to get brand and model number.
This information will help you find manual for your product.
Each manual has troubleshoot steps for that specific brand and model and you can perform the troubleshooting steps.
Generic steps for smoky, yellow-tip flame include:
Too little air: Adjust air shutter
Clogged burner ports: Clean burner ports
Misaligned orifice: Realign orifice and burner.
Most manuals suggest taking apart and cleaning combustion area each year, including burner assembly.
Keep chemicals out of same room as water heater to avoid deterioration of burner and combustion chamber.

3) Add a comment with model and brand number, and I will try to find manual for you so you can walk through troubleshooting steps.

4) Get model and brand number and repost question at fixya.

5) Get model and brand number and repost question at professional plumbing forum.

No hot water

Electric water heater can be repaired by homeowner.

Four things can cause NO hot water:
1) ECO red reset button tripped. Remove top cover on water heater, push red reset button on thermostat. Put insulation and cover back over thermostat.
2) Circuit breaker is tripped, circuit breaker bad, or wire loose in breaker box. Turn breaker on-off and listen for crackling or fizzing sound, and burned smell. Test breaker for 220Volts. Test top two screws on upper thermostat to see if water heater has electricity.
3) Bad upper thermostat. Replace upper thermostat.

4) Bad upper element. Test upper element.

OUR WATER HEATER IS BLOWING FUSES ..

1) Turn off power before touching water heater that is shorting or wet or was flooded.
2) Circuit breakers & fuses blow because of heat. A short will cause heat. Tighten screws on terminals inside box, listen for crackling sound/burning smell from loose-fitting parts.
3) Easy test for circuit breakers: move water heater wires to another same-size breaker. If same-size does not blow, then problem is breaker.
4) A short between fuse box and water heater could be gnawed electrical wire. Inspect wire.
5) Wires have size markings. 5500 watt water heater needs #10 wire. 4500 watt water heater needs #10 wire but can work with smaller #12 if distance is not long. See label on side of heater for wattage, voltage, etc. Element wattage is water heater wattage even with 2 elements.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Figure-Volts-Amps-Watts-for-water-heater.html
6) Short inside water heater can be elements or thermostat. Open covers and inspect parts for burning. Screws should be very tight against copper wire. Sediment could fill bottom of water heater cause lower element to short.
