Question about Canon Cameras

Replacing zoom switch on Canon Vixia HF100 camcorder.

I own a Canon Vixia HF100 camcorder. Quite recently, I've had an issue with the zoom button. The camera would start zooming by itself. Would like to know precisely where I can buy a new switch. Thanks

I have had success finding such parts on Ebay though admittedly some must be shipped from overseas. You might also check Craigslist or Canon video forums for people selling this model for parts.

SOURCE: Canon Powershot S3 IS switches off when I zoom out

It definitely does sound like one of a few things:

  • The transmission system that moves the lens in and out has a problem with it's gears. There is most likely a gear or an actuator that has fallen out of alignment and is getting stuck at a certain point as the lens comes in/out.
  • The motor or servo that drives the transmission system is failing and could be surging the current back into the cameras other components.
  • There is a physical deformity of the lens architecture itself that is preventing the lens from coming in/out.
Any of these symptoms above could trigger the camera to shut itself off to protect itself from further damage. This would give you the reason and opportunity to contact the manufacturer and get assistance with it.

This is something you're definitely going to have to refer to Canon's technical support on. If your camera is still under warranty, you're going to have to get them to replace it or at the very least SERVICE it.

I myself will ALWAYS insist on REPLACEMENT. One might argue that the terms of the limited warranty state that they reserve the right to either replace or service the device...

...but TRUE customer service tells a different story. I have NEVER had anything serviced. I have always had replacements. Either I've INSISTED on it or they've just been smart and not even made it an issue by making it their procedure. I get a brand spankin' new device and THEY get a happy customer.

Always keep in mind how much you spent on their product and ENGRAIN that into their heads.

Here's the deal...

If you ARE out of warranty, get around that by telling them that you DID buy it within the last 9 months and that you do NOT have proof of purcahse. If they insist on asking for it, then humor them and "try" to look for it and once again inform them that you do NOT have it.

They can't really dispute the warranty at that point if they can't prove that you DIDN'T buy it within the last 9 months.

I hate to work the system like that... But I paid $400 for mine. I'll be damned if I'm going to be out the money for it! Am I right?

Anyway... That is the best advice I can give you, unfortunately.

Call them as soon as you can! Get it replaced!

If you think that you can keep yourself together and composed well enough to play the system... Contact Canon's tech support and see what you can accomplish.

Remember... It's not as if you're going to get in any trouble. The worst they can do is refuse you. You have NOTHING to lose but the money you spent on the camera!

Here is their support info.

My Canon HF100 camcorder recently started to zoom or creep by itself. It really makes it difficult to record special moments in life cause you never know if it will zoom in by itself ruining the moment. ...

The problem is indeed athe zoom rocker switch and will require major disassembly to repair. This can be done fairly inexpensively but it's not really a user serviceable problem.

Below is a link to a repair facility which should be able to help you.

Canon HF100 zooms in when not pressed down.

This is most likely a defective zoom rocker switch assembly. This will require major disassembly to repair and can usually be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

I 've had my canon vixia hf100 for about 2 years and it starts to malfunction during video recording. when the machine is cold, meaning it has not been used for a while, i can start and record video for...

Since upgrading your firmware would be the easiest and cheapest method to attempt to fix this issue, I would do that first and see if it helps.

If it's a hardware issue then deciding whether it would be "worth" fixing or not is more up to your preferences and pocketbook than any other consideration really. If the firmware upgrade doesn't fix the issue then I'd get an estimate on doing a hardware fix. You can decide from there whether to just get a new camera or fix the one you have.

you have to whack it on the bottom this will fix the problem (seriously!) bang it down on a hard surface (not too hard!!!) and then see if its fixed. do it a couple of times and it should work fine.

If the camera failed during normal usage and is not the subject of damage then Canon offer a fixed price repair service. In the UK, whatever the fault they charge £127 for the repair. That's cheaper than a new HD camera!
