What kind of phone? Wireless? Land line? If it's wireless, the number of rings are set by the service you have, not by you.

Can I change the number of rings before it goes to voice mail. There is nothing in the manual

If there is REALLY nothing in the manual, probably you can't but I've used some digital phones and all had this attribute. So, READ WELL your manual and check your phone's setup menu. IT SHOULD BE THERE.

How do I set the number of rings before the machine kicks in? I have model number 1710 AT&T.

There should be a setup button. My machine looks to be the same, just an older model. When you press the setup button,it will tell you the current setting.Press memo/repeat or annc/skip to change higher or lower numbers. After you have the setting you want, press the setup button until it exits the system and it will repeat the settings you have selected.Mine also has instructions molded on the back, but nothing for setting # rings.Good luck,Greg

HP 950 fax will send but does not receive faxes

It could be that your machine has been set to "no answer" in the number of rings setup area. See page 46 on how to change the number of rings.

It could also be set for a "distinctive ring pattern". See page 51 on how to change that setting.

Norstar M7310 auto attendant problem

As far as changing the # of rings, that may be your phone company. Feature 983 will get you in to change to number of rings. It goes as follows:
Feature 983
System coordinator mailbox # and password
OK
AA
Lines
Enter Line Number
OK
Table
Rings
CHNG
Enter the desired number of rings
If after changing the number of rings the Auto atendant does not pick up at all, You have to call your phone company and set up the second delay through them. We had the same problem here.

Changing the number of rings to answer on our Model 28112 GE Cordless phone

the voicemail ring count has to be setup on your phone line thru your voicemail menu, and has nothing to do with the answering machine. if you don't want the answering machine to pickup, just shut it off. follow the prompt's for your voicemail settings, there you'll be able to set the amount of rings you want.
hope this helps.
