Question about Maytag Refrigerators

1 Answer

If Mr. Goodwin does not know for sure the Maytag Model numbers how do we know his solution to the bottom of the freezer being covered with ice is correct. I also have a Maytag Mode#MF12665XEM7, Seria

Model #MF12665XEM7 Serial # K22409219. I have cleaned the coils under the front and back, took a hair blower to the ice and melted it from the bottom of the freezer. Turned off the icemaker and still the bottom is icing up again. What now.

Hello Molly;

I am sorry you are so frustrated.

Having done what you have described is only going to last until you cycle through the next automatic defrost. Your freezer section goes through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours, where your unit shuts down for 20-30 minutes and your defrost heater turns. Everything will shut down except for the light bulbs.

You have a frozen drain and the condensate has no where to go except on the bottom of your freezer. The back wall of your freezer needs to be removed, where you can attach a 12 gauge wire to the defrost heater and run it into your drain hole. The defrost heater is about 4" away from your condensate drain and can not clear the ice.

I see you have a bottom freezer. They are a service technicians night mere when it comes to pulling the back wall off to access components.

Since you have a bottom freezer and the difficulty involved to do a permanent fix as described above, you only have two options.

1.) If I was still working for Sears Home Services and I came to your home, I would have to charge you at least $240.00 for the job.

2.) Or, you can turn you unit off for 24 hours with the doors open and let the ice in your condensate pan and drain melt. This may last for a year or several years, it is hard to say.

Why do drains freeze? Once I found a kernel of corn in the drain. It starts with one droplet of condensate clinging to the inside of the drain and then another and so on.

Tips to help prevent your drain from freezing:
1.) Unplug your unit. Pull it out so you can access and remove the back lower panel. Look for any leveling jack screws on each side of the front end. Turn counterclockwise to lower until your unit is free to move. You may have locking wheels.

2.) If you have a small rubber grommet on the end of your drain tube, throw it away. The original purpose was to prevent air from going up the drain tube. What it actually does is inhibits draining and creates a air pocket.

3.) If up have a 'S' shaped drain tube replace it with a straight tube. The 'S' tube also inhibits free draining. They are available at your local appliance store. Do not through the 'S' shape away. On some units they are required to prevent one door from popping open when you close another, but not necessary on all units.

So, Molly, will you give me a helpful on this one?

SOURCE: 11 year old amana bottom freezer icemaker drips water when filling tray

Hello dunc444444
Welcome,
You said, Bottom freezer works fine, but upper refrigerator has no cold air

Is your freezer so full that it is packed to the top especially in the rear?
Refrigerators and freezers share the air from the compressor and travel through vents in the rear of the freezer and fridge.
Sometimes it can effect the cooling in the fridge if the freezer articles block the vents!

The water overfilling in the ice maker is an ice maker problem only.
When we install an ice maker there is a short white plastic tube that we push through the rear
hole of the fridge which supply's the water to the maker, the outside water line attaches to this.
That tube we push through the fridge must go in till it stops. And empties in to a little sistran at the rear of the ice maker. Make sure it did not sip out or backwards a little when you may have moved
rolled the fridge out to clean under it!

Also you need periodically to remove the front grill down in front of the fridge and gently run a refrigerator brush under the coils to clean out the dust that may block air flow over the coils.(the coils are metal black tubes that run back and forth along the bottom of your fridge.
The vacuum will not reach in to that tight space. That's why they make a special brush for this chore.
Let me know how you do?

SOURCE: not getting ice

sounds as if the icemaker is getting too much water and causing the unit to flood out. aside from replacing the icemaker you may be able to adj the amount of water going into the icemaker. there is a screw that holds the front cover of the icemaker inplace. remove the cover and you should see a screw  with a + and - sign on it. try turning the screw 1/4 turn then wait for the icemaker to cycle and see if it improves. keep making theses adjustments until your problem is solved thx peyton

The temperature setting in the fridge section of your refrigerator is generated by diverting a part of the cold air generated in the freezer. This is done with the help of a fan and is controlled with a thermistor. If the temperature doesn't drop low enough then either the fan is faulty and it will have to be replaced
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=3875639
or it's not properly commanded because either the thermistor is faulty
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=3185407
or the control board itself has failed and it continuously activates the defrost resistance

We have a model MBF1956KEB the freezer works but not the fridge

sounds like you have a bad damper,if you go here and look at part number 13 you can see it
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/MAYTAG-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-MBF1956KEB/3048/0161000/M0607105/00010?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=
it's broke in the closed position so no cold air can get blown over from the freezer and into the fridge section, open the freezer door and make sure you hear the fan blowing, also check around the freezer door and ceiling of the freezer and make sure there isn't any ice, common problem with bottom mount freezers is the door can get left open, warm air gets sucked into the freezer and ice forms in the air ducts,if all looks good i would say you have a bad damper, one more thing, remove the bottom kick panel there should be a tech sheet either folded up in the panel or taped on the cabinet wall down there,it will tell you how to do a diagnostics check to check all the parts like the damper, this way you know what part is bad.hope this helps you out and good luck.

You are having either a defrost problem combined with the defrost drain being frozen over. Need to unplug and remove the rear panel in back of freezer to examine exactly what is happening. I have a maytag MSD2754GR, the freezer bottom is all iced

The drian hole has become stopped up and ice has accumulated in the the drian hole. You will need to unplug the fridge and remove the cover on the back (located at the bottom, 6 screws). On the freezer side there is a drian hole with a rubber 90 and a clear line that runs to the drain pan. Remove line and unstop. Don't not put the line back on yet.

Now for the fun part, remove the basket and the two bottom shelves from the freezer. Half way up the back there are 2 screws that need to be removed. After removing screws pull up on the top cover to so you can remove the bottom cover. The bottom cover maybe froze to the coils and to the inside drain pan. Break the ice with a butter knife, and remove cover ( do not hit the coils). Now you need to break the ice that is froze to the the pan and under it. Once you have remove all the ice you will see the drain hole, use a small pointed object to break ice that is in drain hole. Now you can put the drain line back on and make sure that the other end is in the drain pan under the fridge. Now reassemble the fridge and plug it back up.

It took me about 20 minutes to do this.

Hope this helps.

Ice maker is not working anymore. Water doesn't fill the tub. Water dispenser out of the door is still working

I need you to double check the model number. Maytag has a service library at this link. http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/html/index.html
By placing the first 3 letters in the search feature it will take you to models like yours. Chose the correct model that you have and enter the number in the search. I believe that the water control valve on back of your refrigerator is the problem. Maytag is very good about helping their customers. Let me know if you have problems gettting the information you need, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Bottom of Maytag Freezer Ices Up

You have a plugged defrost drain. easiest way to fix it is unload freezer compartment defrost all of the ice, then remove the 2 screws that hold the rear cover in place about half way down the back wall. once this is removed use hot water to flush out the aluminum evap pan at the bottom of the coil. once it is cleared i will usually pur a little bleach in to kill any algae build up.\

be sure to unplug the refrig and use caution not to cut your self on the evap coil as the fins are very sharp..
