Question about Dell Computers & Internet
Hi Good Day I have posted this message reg. my Precision M6500 it's a core i7 720QM with nvidia quadro 2800, bought it again as a used unit, runs great but there's slight issue with the unit, It Runs ok when on Battery, but as i soon as i plugged in the Power adaptor after a few seconds of opening an apps (any app. like ie, google, ms office) the display goes black, then using a flash light i tried to look on the lcd panel, no images aside from no backlight while the unit is still on , hdd, power indicator, fans i can still even turn on and off the keyboard backlight, just the screen blacks out without image, tried to pull the ac power to see if the screen goes back but no luck, i have to force shutdown the unit, power on the unit again with ac plugged in it fully boots, but again opening any apps or connecting via wifi same thing happens, but if on battery everything works fine, I'm using a dell power adapter it's a 130watt 6.7amp 19.5 volts. i tried to enable via bios power supply scan, and it turns up upon Boot "WARNING: 130WATTS ADAPTER DETECTED, U MUST USE A 210W OR HIGHER ADAPTER" THE PERFORMANCE WILL ADJUST TO MATCH THE POWER OF YOUR ADAPTER" is this causing the screen blackout using an under rated power adapter, i tried using a dell alienware 14x power rated 150W 7 amp (20w higher though) but it just last a bit longer "a few second " versus the 130 watt, then same thing happen. Is this kind of behavior common on a precision M6500, should it act this way, Thanks
You seem to already have the answer: Your power supply is underpowered for operating your laptop. It is probably supplying enough power to charge the unit, when it is off, but the power draw is so great that the unit is selectively shutting off various elements of itself to protect itself from damage.
You can use the power supply to (slowly) recharge the battery, but you shouldn't be using it to power the laptop. Do yourself a favour and buy the recommended power pack.

Testimonial: "Hi thanks for the helpful advice, I,m still using the lappy, but i have to charge that to full when the unit is "OFF" or still ok if it's powered "ON" but in idle (doing nothing), Thanks for the heads up will be buying a new power brick soon. Again Many Thanks Sir Michael"
It sounds like the back light power inverter is triggering a safety feature, perhaps due to a fault or bad charging system. I'd first contact Dell to make sure you're using the right power adapter for your unit. Enabling a bios pdu scan that's resulting in a message such as the one you described WARNING: 130WATTS ADAPTER DETECTED, U MUST USE A 210W OR HIGHER ADAPTER" THE PERFORMANCE WILL ADJUST TO MATCH THE POWER OF YOUR ADAPTER" is a hint to a larger problem so, if that's all correct take that to an authorized dealer and swallow the cost. Remember that's a workstation so lifecycle services may be having issues with the brick.

The problem is the gpu not power supply..i have the same problem with 250 w power sypply..i have replaced the fx3800 with firepro and now it is ok..the gpu is around 130$..or if you dont whant to spend money try to downclock the gpu and it will work..you need to use NVIDIA power mizer manager software..and select medium range settings that will take down the gpu to 300 mhz core clock and reboot the pc..and you will never have black screen again
