Question about Cameras
Is there a way to recover the images.
Probably the images are not lost and do not need to be "recovered". Sounds like something happened to interfere with the operation of the program that knows how to display those images. Perhaps some other software was installed that messed up the program in question, or messed up the "file associations" (the thing that tells the computer that a particular program is used to work with a particular kind of file). I would try reinstalling whatever software program you had been using to view the images in question, i.e. before this problem occurred, when you used to open one of the photos, what program was it that appeared with the photo? That's the program I would reinstall.

Testimonial: "I'm afraid that if I uninstall and reinstall the Photofunstudio software that I will lose all the images in the process. Maybe this is not a risk, but I don't want to lose 5 plus years of images!"
Sounds like some incompatibility issue between the images and the program which you have chosen to open these images have caused the problem. I also would recommend to either use the right software or re-installing the software you are using to open the files.
Another solution could be to recover the images using a recovery software. You can go for retrievephotos.com

Is this happening in a cd or dvd? or on a drive? if it is a cd/dvd wrongly written data is the reason, you will see the file names etc and when you open it you get the error message. you have to rewrite if you have the original files. even if you use a data recovery software like iso buster, it will go through the motions of recovery, raising false hopes with the long time it takes and then you still have these empty files. you can try isobuster with the drives, you may recover- no guarantees. that error may have happened during partitioning? easeus may help.

Testimonial: "The "error" message appears in the thumbnail which should show the picture. This is on my desktop using Photofunstudio 8.1 software. where many of the affected images have been stored for years and were always accessible until now"

I have the same problem with my Canon Powershot SX110IS. images dissapear with the notation "unidentified image". I brought my camera in to a local camera shop, and they were able to save the lost images. They told me I had an inexpensive, low quality memory card that is causing this problem. I upgraded to a high quality one and haven't had the problem since.

SOURCE: Problem downloading image
One of the images did not finish writing to the card properly (usually in the last 4 or 5 images, or the last video)
Try selecting all but the last 10 images and chose import selected. This should work. Then delete those from the card.
This bit is important
Put the card back in the camera (if it's in a usb reader) if not, disconnect the camera and put it into playback mode. View the remaining 10 images/video.
Try re importing and it should work fine! I've had this problem since ilife '09 and this method always fixes it. It seems to happen when the cards get full. Try not to completely fill a memory card and you should not get the problem.

I have had success with this... Download the program
You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.
