Depends on what you want to do with the files. Data is usually interchangeable between Mac and PC file formats. FAT-32 format files are limited to 4gb in size. You cannot boot a Mac from one of these files or from a drive formatted to FAT-32. To be bootable, an Intel Mac system drive must be formatted as a GUID partition map. Most of the new hard drives come with software that enables Macs to read and write to them without reformatting, thus they are completely interchangeable for data.

SOURCE: Need to Reformat my Western Digital 500 Gig Hardrive

You want to make the drive FAT32. Both Mac and PC can read and write to FAT32 drives. Macs cannot write to NTFS drives, but they can read from them. Many external hard drives come preformatted as FAT32 for this reason, so users can do exactly what you're trying to do.
FAT32 was the prevalent drive format in the PC world for several years. FAT32 drives are somewhat less stable/more prone to errors than newer formats like NTFS, but if you take care of the drive, you should not have any trouble.

Format your hardrive for Mac OS:
Go to Disk Utilities under the go menu in your finder. Select the external drive and click on the erase tab. Clikc erase again and it formats the drive. You can now copy files onto the drive.

Its beeping because its damaged! sad to say but the beeping is an error code! the other downside is hard drives are hard to repair so you may need to buy a new one.

SOURCE: cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

I just bought a new Imac computer. I had a Maxtor One Touch 4 500 GB that I used with my windows xp. What if anything do I need to do to...

The drive will need to be reformatted to the HFS file spec for Mac. You will lose any data on the drive when you do that.

However, you shouldn't need to do anything other than plug the drive into your iMac, then once the icon appears on your desktop (may take a minute), double-click on it to start the Mac install process.

If the Mac install process fails for some reason, it may be because the drive was previously installed on a Windows machine, and you may have to simply treat it as a "raw" new drive, and reformat it using the Mac operating system utilities.

Hope that's helpful.

I try to copy form computer to hard drive with 6-8 GB flle. But it shows the message " The file size is too big to copy" So how can I copy over 8 GB between computer and External Hardrive? thank you

This is most likely a result of the drive being formatted in FAT32. This formatting option is highly compatible and can be moved between Mac, PC and Linux with ease but lacks the robustness of NTFS, EX? or the newer Macintosh formatting options. One of the things it lacks is the ability to handle files larger than 2GB.

I can walk you through the steps of converting the drive to a newer file format but I need to know what operating system you are using. Please reply with either Mac 10.? or Windows ??? where the question mark is a number or name of the specific version you're using such as OS 10.4 or 10.6 in Mac or windows XP or 7.

I can help you with either but need to know which instructions you require.

PC/Mac compatability issues

Hi
Is it formatted in NTFS? OSX will read most formats but cannot write to NTFS.
I would suggest that you copy all your files from the drive on to the Mac then use disk utility to reformat the drive in the native Mac format and then copy everything back again.
You may find that once formatted, Time machine will pop up and ask if you want to use the drive as your time-machine back-up. If the drive is the same size as the Mac's drive (or smaller) I would say NO and get a larger drive to use for TM.
If you need to connect the drive to a windows machine at all then don't use the native format (HFS+), use FAT instead. The mac can work with that (although it will probably mess up your files names).

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

I plugged my seagate into my mac OS and backed it up first, then went to my pc running windows xp and tried to locate the seagate drive and couldn't. Can I only use the Seagate on one machine or another?

Hi,

If you are planning to use the Seagate Hard Drive on a PC and MAC better format it on your MAC Computer thru disc Utility and choose MS-DOS. This should solve the problem.

Mac has the ability to recognize a FAT, NTFS and MAC File System for the hard drive but the PC Computer cannot recognize MAC File System.

Check on your mac the File system of your hard drive.
MAC OS Extended
MAC OS Extended (Journaled)

If this is the file system then you now know that it will not be read by PC.

Also formating it with the use of PC will only result in an NTFS File System, and it can be read by Mac but it is only in a Read Only mode. You cannot copy paste or even erase on the drive having an NTFS on a MAC.

Maxtor Basics portable 320gb Mac to pc compatability problems

Hi Tys,

I had a similar issue with my Maxtor Basics portable 500GB drive. I hadn't formatted mine yet, but had heard there were issues, so decided to find out before I start. I even saw your post here looking for an answer. Finally, one of my friends told me the following solution, which worked fine for me:

Don't format the drive as any of the Mac OS Extended options, simply reformat it as MS-DOS (it should be one of the options in Disk Utilities when you choose Erase and go to the Volume Format dropdown list).

Your Mac should be able to recognise and use the drive in this format and it works for PCs. Transferring files between the two shouldn't be a problem.

A thing to note, though, is that these Maxtor drives apparently come ready-formatted as MS-DOS (mine did). But while my Mac recognised the drive, I couldn't copy files on to it. If this happens, erase this MS-DOS formatting with... MS-DOS. Don't ask me why this works, I'm not a Mac Genius, but now my Maxtor is trouble-free and can transfer files from PC to Mac and back again.

Hope this works out for ya!

K
