Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

Skips "soak/prewash" function and moves from "add garment" to "wash" function. never fills with water. all hoses connected and water turned all the way on.

Tried test mode (cycling between all settings using "end of cycle" button). tried starting a wash cycle on each setting including "clean washer" setting.

Water valve solenoids control the water to fill the washer. If neither hot nor cold solenoids are operating then it may be the control module or timer that need to be looked at.

It sounds to me like the fill level switch is stuck, so it thinks the tub already has enough water. Since water pressure and flow vary at different installations, fill is controlled by a level sensor switch, not a timer. Typically there's a tube with one end connected to a fairly low point on the outer tub. The other end is connected to a diaphragm switch in the control panel. As water fills in the tub and tube, it forces the air in the tube into the switch, causing it to indicate a full state. If the switch is stuck in that full state, you would get the symptom you describe.

Find the parts drawings from one of the many internet parts suppliers to see where the switch and fill tube are. Take the tubing off at the top end and blow through it, in case the bottom end is clogged with lint. Then use that tubing or another piece to blow lightly into the switch, You should be able to hear it click and clack as it switches from low to full states and back.

If you know how, use an ohmmeter to check that the switch is actually changing states. Usually these switches have three terminals, Common, NO (Normally Open), and NC (Normally Closed).
--When you don't blow, there should be conduction ONLY between Common and NC. (This is the empty state which must reached before Spin will start.)
--When you are blowing, there should be conduction ONLY between Common and NO. (This is the full state which must be reached before Wash starts.)

SOURCE: UL Code

Solved the unbalanced problem - open the top of the machine (press in with a flat putty knife about 3" in on the front on each side while lifting up as there are 2- 1" wide catches). Once both sides are unlatched, raise the lid then slightly lift the rear of the lid so that it fits into the curved part at the top of the hinges then open all the way - tape the lid to the top so it doesn't flap about and scotch the lid to keep it from falling back down on you. Now, look around - see all that rust?  The rust has fallen into and gotten underneath one or more of the 4 white plastic suspension "ball joints" which have probably totally dried out by now from their factory grease because of the water, bleach, and rust particles.  Having someone help you, simply lift up on one of the 4 corner suspension rods - gravity and weight is all that holds them down. The white ball will lift out of the socket and still be attached to the rod. Clean out the rust, lightly sand the "socket" with emery cloth, then slop in a fingerful of grease. I used automotive wheel bearing grease with graphite in it. Also scrub off all embedded rust on the white plastic ball. Lower that corner back into the newly cleaned and greased socket and repeat for the other 3 corners. Now when you move the tub around notice how the balls pivot in their sockets like they are supposed to. When they were dry and rusty they wouldn't move enough to allow the tub to twist like it should so it slammed around.  Now, shake your head in disgust that after only 2 years there is so much rust that you wonder if it will make it another year before falling apart, close the lid, and try another load.  That totally solved my off-balance problem where even a single handkerchief would give the UL error. It is still a finicky machine, but at least once again works like it did when new.

How do I dye in my washer

You put the water into the machine, then add the dye to the water after it is filled up, use the hottest water you can use for your fabric. Let it agitate for a minute or two, then add the garment. Let it finish the wash cycle and it will be dyed. You can also dye things on top of the stove. Heat a pot of water, add dye, place garment into the dye and let it sit in the water for about 20 minutes then take it out and rinse in cold water.
Note: hot water will make your garments shrink, so be careful

How To Clean Silk

Hand Wash the item. Gently move the silk fabric around in the soapy water. Rub stains with your fingers or a sponge to clean them. Pour the water out when finished washing your garment.
Rinse the silk garment in a vinegar solution. White vinegar removes soap, restores shine and softens silk. Fill the basin with cold rinse water. Add 1/4 c. (50 ml) white vinegar. Gently move the garment around in the water to thoroughly rinse it. Empty the basin again.
Rinse the item in cold water. Add cold water to the basin. Rinse the silk item a second time in a basin of fresh, cold water. Turn the garment over and around to ensure it is completely rinsed and free of soap.

MIELE W412 PREWASH INDICATOR FLASHING

If your PreWash is flashing then you have a pressure problem. You can dry using a washer machine cleaner or doing a hot cycle with white vinegar. If that doesn't help the electronic would have to be changed.

The Series 10 and 11 machines have three level fill points the Series 12 and above have two level fill points.

I know Bulky Items wash selection will give you a High water fill which is only 7 inches or so of water in the wash basket. 3.5 inches of water for a medium fill.

You can turn on/open the water inlet valves in Service Mode but I would not recommend that. A manual fill as you did is the only safe way to set the additional water level IMOP.

Kenmore machine won't do more than fill on SOAK setting;won't run

I'm unsure how the normal operation was restored. I attempted to correct it by setting the machine to SOAK+PREWASH overnight to assure that the SOAK timer had run out. Then My wife (who never uses SOAK or PREWASH options) made a clockwise trip around the TIMER control stopping at each of the "detents" (I did not witness this) one of the spin entry points worked to empty the washwater and the NORMAL wash cycle resumed normal function.
I'm not confident that my description above contains all the essential information needed to correct this problem and am disappointed that
I cannot find SUPPORTING LITERATURE that shows how to use these alternate cycles and combinations without another hang-up like these two that I have experienced. That which is supplied with the washer is pathetically inadequate and the Sears site has little else to offer. Document #8566913 was not delivered with the machine but I did find it somewhare on the INTERNET printed parts of it for additional help. *ALERT* #1: Just now I discovered that it does cover the Model series 110.2692* of which my machine is part ... and it ALONE warns of the 20 minute mandatory wait when two controls are set to obtain SOAK+PREWASH function.
*ALERT* #2: Last nite I discovered that the lid switch makes NO SOUND when the lid is lowered normally but can be made to click by pressing on the left rear of the lid. Feeling under the lid, I found no switchpad (?) on the operating arm as shown in diagrams found elsewhere.
FINAL QUESTIONS: 1) could failure to FULLY operate the lid switch allow partial function of this machine, e.g. to fill, agitate, rinse and spin normally but not to soak or prewash? 2) can anyone direct me to a place where I can obtain breakdown diagrams repair directions for this machine?

Prewash flash

If the pre wash led is flashing it indicates a h20 error (time out filling) some common causes are fill hose twisted trapped or kinked tap not turnd on the waste hose is connected incorectly and is causing the applionce to syphone if your waste pipe gose into a down pipe ensure it is in no more than 4 inches maximum and if it is connected to the u bend undr the sink you need to make sure the pipe gose above 60cm high at some point.

Prewash always flashing

yes i had a similar problem the prewash light kept coming on mid wash cycle and eventually stopped taking in the water just bypassing it straight to outlet without filling machine. i found if you remove the pump at the rear of machine and disconnect hoses there was a build of lets say deposits leading to a sensor through a opaque plastic connector to the top of machine . after cleaning the hoses thoroughly and removing all the crud machine worked as it should do, hope this helps
