Look at the both starters & see if the teeth are the same

Same numbers of teeth & the same pitch of tooth,
as far as engagement goes

I read in Motor or Motor Age which are professional
trade magazines, that is a problem when changing
a starter

It should not be on a new one, but can,as those parts fit
many applications

Loose the test light & use a volt meter (always)

What happened to the OE Starter in just 3 years or so?

Did you test it before removing it? (the old one)

Does the starter work out of the car?

When you turn the engine is the flywheel running true,
not wobbling ,bent or loose on its bolts?

Testimonial: "the old starter tested fine and the new one as well, it does engage out side of the vehicle but not when installed, vehicle stalled then the battery died, after charging the battery the starter was not engaging to the fly wheel just spinning all three starters are doing this, the teeth are all the same and count the same, every thing is pointing to fly wheel is broke but I have turned engine over by hand full 360 and bumped starter every 90 degrees, still no contact, i am guessing the gcm has caused interference issue with solenoid but I cant test that part with my equipment, but also had a stalling issue before this, reset ecm by key on for 15 minutes then off for 30 seconds then tried to start and this was when the starter acted up, cranked fine when trying before battery died, battery now fully charged and still no contact to fly wheel, as for the fly wheel running true, the engine wont crank over so I wouldnt know, the starter is in front of engine so no reason to get under car, besides cant see the bolts if trans is in the way"

Starter not egaging right?

There are two types of starter, a bendix gear type, and a pre engaged type, neither should rotate with the engine running, with a pre engaged starter the gear is connected to the flywheel but when the engine starts a solinoid pulls the gear out of the flywheel, with a bendix type, the starter motor spins the bendix shaft which in turn winds the gear up and into the flywheel ring gear.

Starter making whining noise

sounds as if your starter isn't engaging, usually due to either the solenoid not operating the bendix or a bendix fault, to prove a point, if the vehicle is a manual, put it in gear, handbrake off and push the car forward ( which will turn the engine into a different possition) then put h/brake on out of gear and try starter again, if it tries to turn over its possiby the starter ring gear, if not it's starter.

Starter staying engaged after starting on 2005 malibu ls

check to engagement wire at the starter, make sure that power is only present when key is in the start position.if this is the case, then your sarter bendix is hanging up on the flywheel, this is caused by either inproper shiming where the starter is bolted to the block, or having the wrong bendix on the starter, there or several different bendix s general motors uses, also if the return spring in the solonoid is broken or not strong enough the starter could hang up. if the problem is power continuing to feed the solonoid with the key in the run position you could have a bad or out of adjustment ignition switch, since the power feeds the solonoid directly from the ignition switch, other than the neutral switch on the colomn

I have a mercury 120 hp jet boat. When I turn the ignition over the starter engages and the bendix turns the flywheel for about two seconds then it disengages. I have a brand new starter, ignition and...

Eventhough you say you have a new starter..this sounds like it may be the problem...When you you turn the ignition...The bendix(starter drive) should lunge forward and engage the flywheel until you let go of the ignition. If it doesn't...you have a bad starter drive...If the starter is still under warranty..take it back and get another.I've had this problems on multiple vehicles..especially Fords ,Lincolns and Mercurys

Truck has electrical power but won't turn over. I think I can hear the starter solenoid engaging. Not sure. where do I start trouble shooting?

Safety first!--Make sure you're in park & brake on-- Try shorting across the starter terminals with a screwdriver,if the bendix kicks in & nothing spins, remove the starter & put in bench vice ,(or hold down securely), & jump with cables.--REMEMBER POLARITY--If the starter spins you are in deep *******---something in the motor is probably locked up.(If the starter doesn't spin get a new one.)

75 sportster starter just spins. 1st time it did it I tapped starter with rubber mallet and started. No problems for weekbut now doing same thing, and tapping doesn't help starter just spins...

If the starter spins but the engine does not turn, it's not your starter. It is your starter drive or Bendix on the starter shaft. Disconnect the battery. Take the outer primary cover off. Take the wires off the starter solenoid, remove the pin, cup and spring on the inside of the primary, and remove the solenoid. With this off, you can remove the starter shaft. Clamp the starter shaft in a vise with soft jaws on it. You don't want to scar your starter shaft. You'll see a round thing on the end of the shaft with two flats on it. Use a wrench to take this off. IT HAS LEFT HANDED THREADS. Slide the old Bendix off and put the new one on. Put a drop of Loctite 271 red on the threads and put the nut back on the end and tighten. Put your bake back together in reverse of how you took it apart. When you buy the replacement Bendix, but a good one. Do not buy the Chinese version, they're junk.

Good Luck

When i start the 95 tahoe, i hear a spinning noise. starter is not engaging the engine. it's a brand new starter.

Hello there:
The spinning that you are hearing is the bendix spinning there is a
engagement spring that forces the bendix to engage on the flywheel
If this spring is weak or broke the bendix cant engage furthermore if the teeth on the bendix are broke or chipped or the teeth on the fly wheel are chipped or broke -this will not allow the bendix to engage or start to turn the motor ok so i would have these things checked out ok?
I hope that this is very helpful for you best regards
