Question about Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

1 Answer

Issue: Error "The search provider could not be installed." Fix: Use this link to add google search as default search provider. Any other link tested does not work, no other known fix is available. This issue can effect multiple browsers, and multiple versions. Format Reinstall does not fix this issue. Hope this fix helps some people out since there is so little information about it, and it took some digging to find it.

I cant get rid of web searches and make google my only search engine

you need to go to IE 'Tools' tab;
click on Internet Options at bottom;
go to the 'Programs' tab, click;
next, click on 'Manage Add-Ons';
on left where it says "Search Providers", click;
if google is not there then look at bottom left of window where it says
'Find more search providers', click'
when it opens find Google and click/dbl to select it or Add and it will be added to search providers;
back out to where Manage Add-ons and if it does not appear you may have to close and restart; if it is there select google and at bottom right, make it the Default search provider;
after it is default, you can remove the others by selecting and then clicking 'Remove' just as you did for making default.
should do it.

How do I change my search engine for my home page?

Warning: If your search engine has recently changed and the URL in the address line of your browser has a long link in it, you probably have a virus or malware that has hijacked your search engine.

Otherwise, bring up the General tab on the Options or Internet Options for your browser and key in the url you want for the home page (e.g. and click the OK button. If you click on the house icon on the browser (or restart the browser) that will be the page that comes up.

If it resets to the previous value, you have malware and will need to run anti-malware software to fix it... which is a whole different discussion.

Why can I not get google as my search engine

If you are using IE then you might have installed another piece of software that keeps on setting your default search engine to another site. This solution is for Internet Explorer 11, on your menu bar click 'Tools' then click on 'Manage add-ons'. In the left pane you will see several categories. Click on 'Toolbars and extensions', in the left pane all your toolbars/extensions will be displayed. Look for the one matching your current search engine and if it is there click on it to select it. Now in the bottom pane on right hand side there should be a button marked 'Disable' click on this. Do this for all search entries except the ones you want to keep. Next, still in the same window click on 'Search Providers', in the right pane one by one select the ones you don't want and click on remove in the bottom pane. Click on 'Google' in the right hand pane and click on 'Set as default' in the bottom pane. If Google is not listed under search providers click on 'Find more toolbars and extensions....' in the bottom left corner. It will launch a new IE window with the IE add-on gallery. In the search box enter Google and in the results look for 'Google Search' and click on the button 'Add to Internet Explorer'. This will add id under your search providers and you can then follow the same procedure. Lastly select the tick box 'Prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provider'. Now click close and restart your browser.

I want to install google as my default search engine

Wonderful but for which browser? I am guessing Internet Explorer? If so, look at the right top corner of the browser window, you will see a few icons that look like Home, Star and Gear. Click on the icon that looks like a Gear. That will open a list, from the list select "Manage add-ons". On the "Manage add-ons" window, from the Add-on Types list on the left, select "Search Providers". Now it should show you all installed search providers on the right hand side and the one that is currently used will be marked as "default". If Google was already installed but not default, you can click on the "Set as default" button on the right bottom corner of this window. If Google was not installed, then at the left bottom you will see couple of links, click on the one that reads "Find more search providers..."

When a new browser window pops open showing all available search providers, click on Google, then click on the button that reads "Add to Internet Explorer" button (orange color). After you click it, it will give you a pop-up confirmation box asking you to install or cancel, at this window, you also have the option box to check which would make it default search provider as well. After you are done, close out of all browser windows and re-launch Internet Explorer for changes to take effect.
