I have never used a serger before and a friend is letting me use hers. There is string on the machine, but how do I put the colors I want on and get it to the needle? The machine is a Baby Lock BL3-417. ...

here's a tip I learned for sewing machine or serger

do one thread cone at a time-the cone or spool that's on the serger--cut the thread close to the cone-then remove the cone from the serger ,,don't remove the thread that you just cut from the serger,,now put your thread on the spindle & tie your thread to the thread that you just cut (make sure it's a small knot) now the thread that's in the needle pull until the thread that in the needle is your & then cut off the other thread & make sure to cut of the knot part & leave a thread tail of 4 to 6 inches

do each spindle this way

Hi GailKelley,
I have the same model serger. I will make a copy of the stitches and figure out how to get it to you. I recently took my serger out of storage to start some projects. I always struggle threading it but love the look of the stitches when it is set up correctly. Be in touch. MnFriend

Serger is not stitching at all. It has something to do with how the thread is installed. Needing a diagram

The diagram is on the inside of the serger door;

Raise the antenna to it's highest position.
Turn the handwheel until the loopers are at their highest position.
Set tensions to zero and raise the presser foot.
Begin threading from right to left, beginning with the upper looper.
Set the tensions back to mid-range.
Lower the presser foot and stitch a chain and if it is formed as it should be you are ready to serge.

There are manuals available for downloading at the Babylock website for the models DX and SX.

I don't have a manual for my Baby lock Pro line model # BL4-738 NS. It was given to me and I have threaded it accordingly to the diagram on the machine but it won't pick up the stitch.

You will have to order the manual from a Baby Lock dealer.

This model may have to be threaded in a certain order.

Try raising the presser foot and setting the tensions to zero.

Turn the handwheel so the upper looper (the curved one) is at it's highest position - there may be a mark on the side of the serger where you align the handwheel for this.

Thread the upper looper and then the lower looper and then the needles.

Pull the threads under the presser foot and toward the side of the serger.

Set the tensions back to 4 - 6, lower the presser foot.

Hold onto the thread tails and gently press the power pedal to begin a thread chain before serging fabric.
