In 90% CRT TV circuit, the filament voltage is taken from one among the winding of EHT transformer. The rest, it is taken from the main power supply regulator [SMPS] board. With Sony brand TVs, it is taken from the EHT winding itself. Refer any circuit manual to Sony, to make it understand. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Filament winding is one of the few manufacturing processes which allow a high level of automation and process control needed to ensure the required production volume and quality control.

Check whether the filament of the picture tube glows. If not, check all the solder terminals to CRT base socket. Check the serial resistor connected to the supply voltage to filament. . Check the continuity of filament with a multi-meter.If you are not familiar with electronics, do not attempt to repair! Whether you suffer fatal electrical shock! Instead, contact the nearest service center!

Turn tv on no picture everything else works. turn it off & on a few times maybe more and it comes on and stays on. what could be the problem thanks mike L

Hello,
If everything else works - there is sound and high voltage (static on the screen) - but there is no picture (including no on-screen menus), this limits the likely area of problems is the video output circuitry or CRT filament connections. Check for bad soldering on the CRT ports and around the flyback transformer.

This source of bad connections can result in a variety of erratic symptoms. Check for bad solder connections on the CRT port.

No filement on rca f36669 pix tube

I assume you have either looked into the rear cover, or removed it. The worst case scenario is an open heater (filament) in the crt itself although this is not real common. If you can use an ohmmeter/continuity tester you can see on the crt pc board which pins are the filaments. Pull the socket off and check for low resistance between these two crt pins if low then odds are the filament is ok. The next thing is to check the solder at the filament connections on the crt board as often you will find "ring cracks" around them and they need re-soldering. The filament circuit is supplied from the IHVT (flyback). Generally with the socket unplugged from the tube you should find low resistance across these two connections also. You read back through the transformer winding if it is ok. If it tests open you may have an open fuse resistor or a bad solder connection at the flyback. The filament (heater) terminals are usually labeled on the main board at the transformer.

Sound but NO picture

Hello ashleewith2e,

This sounds like a high voltage problem or a picture tube issue (burnt out filament). I would first determine if you had high voltage at the anode of the TV by using a high voltage probe. If you do not have high voltage then I would suspect the voltage doubler, the IHVT (Integrated High Voltage Transformer) or the Horizontal Output Transistor (I doubt this only because you don't have a power supply failure and I would expect this in a modern TV since the high voltage supply is tied to the low voltage supply), the more likely suspect is the voltage doubler. Second possibility I would check is the CRT socket board and CRT filament. Unplug the TV and with a multimeter set to read resistance check to see if the filament pins read a low resistance if so the filament is good. Plug the TV back in and turn it on and check the voltage on the CRT board and compare them to the schematic values. These two tests should localize the issue. Now, If you have a background in electronics, this should be no problem to do, however if you do not have a background in electronics, I would suggest that you have a qualified TV technician troubleshoot and repair this TV set.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

RCA 32" TV - Model #32F531T - Faded to black

Isolate filament voltage from CRT,i.e. unplug Crt socket from pix tube.Measure filament voltage on CRT PCB.If present, suspect bad pix tube.If missing, solder any/all connects in filament circuit, meaning CRT board first then main PCB.
